Shore fuel vs marina fuel

All of the marinas here in the north east are 87 with ethanol mercury says 87 is fine just make sure you treat the fuel as on the bottle of stabil if you go over don't worry you can't really over treat just don't under treat if you don't feel comfortable use 89 I probably wouldn't go 91

Just called around... found a station not toooo far that sells ethanol free for $4/gallon. That's a dollar cheaper than the marina! I'll save $21 per fill-up.

It is only OK if the systems are approved for alcohol fuels. MM

That is the right thing to do even if you need to put in jugs and fill the boat. Look at the post about the fuel canisters eaten up by the corn crap

I agree mm but here in the NE you can't get ethanol free fuel so pure gas Is not available so you need to treat the fuel

In CT all gas including marina gas must have ethanol. I use Sta-bil every time I fill up. I have what is in the boat when it is yanked. Come spring, put is some high octane and more Sta-bil Boat runs fine. Again the more you use, the less the problem.

I've been paying $5 per gallon for ValvTect fuel since I bought the boat 4 years ago. I don't have a problem paying it for several reasons.

For starters, fuel is one of the cheaper aspects of my boating. I told the Admiral before we bought the boat..."not one word about fuel costs". She agreed, and has complied.

Another reason is the potential problems discussed earlier in the thread. The site linked below has some information that I found interesting and informative. I know they are "selling" the product, but like I said, interesting & informative. Hope it helps... http://www.valvtect.com/

I have been using Valvtect gas there are marinas and gas stations in almost every state selling non ethanol gas. Since we purchased our boat I haven't had any issues relating to fuel problems except one time I purchased some gas at a marina that had an almost empty tank never again will I fill up unless I know the marina. Here's a site showing state by state non ethanol stations and marinas.

Our marina sells 89 octane ethanol free for $5.20 a gallon. I get a discount so it was $4.95 the last time I saw it. Yesterday I found a gas station with E-Free gas and they wanted $4.09 with cash or $4.19 by credit card. I got 10 gallons worth and put it in last night. I don't think the hassle is worth the savings and I'll go back to getting fuel at the marina and just suck it up.

You can use any grade 87 or above for the 3.0. When I had that motor I would run the higher octane to limit the potential for dieseling. If you run 87 and shut it down hot it can diesel pretty bad. If you let it idle and cool down for a minute before shutdown it really helps but doesn't eleminate the potential for dieseling. When running 90 or higher I had no dieseling issues even when shut down immeadiatly after full throttle operation. Carbon build up can also increase the potential to diesel.

I have ethanol problems in my weed whacker but not my boat, I use it a lot more than the trimmer.
So which grade at tje gas station should I use? Was putting in "90" at the marina

You can look for non-ethanol gas in your area here: http://www.pure-gas.org/

Bob, it is early in the morning out your way. :smt043

The docks I was at last year claimed to have pure gas. I already had a fuel test kit, and I tested the fuel on Ft Drum gas station, and started a riot because they actually were pumping out E15 graded fuel labled as E10 (standard fuel). So after they fixed that issue, they had E10 in all their fuel, and was about $1.25 cheaper a gallon than the dock price.

For fun I tested the dock fuel. Wouldnt you know it, it was E10 as well. Dockmaster said there was additive already in the fuel to stabalise it. Something I could have done myself had I saved 1.25 a gallon and filled up my monster 124 gallon tank on post.

Moral of this story... buy a fuel tester (about $30) and test the fuel your dock is pumping out. One reason 'real gas' is so expensive is because of the extra taxes the Fed puts on it.

Great input, the "penalty" tax on non-ethanol fuel is 10 cents from the feds. Not sure if states add their own. What fuel tester do you have?

I ordered it from ebay, but this is the product

It will also show if you have excessive water in the fuel. Very simple to use, you put about a tablespoon of water in, fill it up to the line with fuel, add 2 blue drops and shake. In about 5 min you have your results as the fuel sets on top of the water, the ethanol sets on top of the fuel and will be coloured blue.

We stopped by a gas station (few miles up the road) that had ethanol free 90 octane for $4.50 a gallon so I took two 5 gallon cans with me. Put them in the boat (after 30mL of stabil marine formula) and spent a couple hours out on the lake today with no problems.

if you run ethenol free fuel you dont need the stabil the stabil is for ethenol to help eliminate the moister issues and the agressiveness of the ethanol. If you use ethanol fuel its 2 oz for every 8 gallons then 1 oz after dont worry if you over treat it wont hurt anything also engine damage from ethanol is a slow problem over time it's not an instant problem so you need to stay vigalant I would just always use the same fuel unless you run the tank dry all the time every time so you either use ethanol with proper treatment or pure gas that way you won't get stuck with any problems if your schedule dosnt let you use the boat for a while just my $.02 but key is enjoy your boat happy boating
