Has anyone had any success at installing a shoot thru the hull transducer for a depth / fish finder. I dont want to drill thru the hull and to run the wire on the outside would be an eye sore.
I have a 97 175 ob with a 3.0 merc

I did and it was pretty simple to do. I put mine in the bilge/engine compartment. I couldn't see the unit's screen so I had a buddy watch while I moved it around the floor until I got a reading that approximately matched what I knew the depth of my slip to be. From there it was just a matter of epoxying it to the floor and keeping it from moving until it settled. The manual mentions it works fine with some hulls while some others need to be shaved or modified a little bit, so YMMV!

Just plug it in and move the transducer around the bottom in different spots and if you get a accurate reading you should be good to go!

I thought a OB hanging off the back was already an eyesore:huh: J.K.
Call up Airmar. And check out there website. They make all the transducers. I almost went with the R199. Airmar advised against it

Very easy to do. I installed the airmar p79 a few months ago. I followed the instructions and got a base reading in 100 ft of water just holding the ducer in the water. Then put the ducer in a bag of the pink stuff and moved it around the bilge until I got the best reading. Siliconed the base, let it cure over night, added the pink stuff and set the ducer in the base housing.

You'll need and angle finder to determine the rise so you can dial in the ducer.

you just have to make sure that you are adhearing it to the hull and not an inner liner. if your bilge floor has a nice shiny smooth bilge floor you have an inner liner and you might have a problem with the ducer reading. What will happen is there is a gap between the hull bottom and the inner liner, so if you put the ducer on the inner liner with a gap then the hull bottom, it might give you irratic readings or not work at all. Like tail chaser said ask airmar what would be the best for your application

There's more to the installation then just finding a place in the hull where the transducer reads bottom while docked.
That is, If you want to read bottom while moving at speed anyway.
