I just heard from a high school buddy that his brother was on a ship that has been reported missing in Hurricane Joaquin. Steve, my thoughts are with you and hope that your brother is ok. Howie, I am praying for you and hope that you come home safe.

this is an article I found about it: http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/02/us/hurricane-joaquin/index.html

You can't fix stupid. Taking a ship into a class 4 hurricane zone. It's all about the money!!!!!!!!!

The ship left Jacksonville on Tuesday and was due to arrive in PR today. Right now I am worried about my friends, not the stupidity of the Captain or the shipping company.

I'm concerned for them, too!

Yul and I were talking about that. What a shame. Can't imagine being stuck in a washing machine. Our prayers are with all those on board, let's hope for the best.

Sorry to hear the news about this crew and your friends brother.

As far as the "stupid" comment, the post is not only mean spirited, but ill informed. These large commercial Ships run in all kind of weather, and do their best to stay clear whenever possible.

Real thoughtful reply! There's always one thoughtless idiot I guess.

I don't understand why an epirb has not gone off
That's a good point. How often are EPIRBs inspected on a commercial ship?

I had read that the cargo ship was experiencing engine trouble, not sure if that was before the weather set in on them or not, but once the engine problems started happening combined with the impending hurricane, one would think the crew would have prepared to abandon ship into the lifeboats immediately.

i read that too about an epirb briefly being received. a member on another site i frequent said he works for the shipping company. not sure if he knows any of the crew though. hope they find the rest alive and well

Very tragic news. I am still waiting for more news reports, and will read more this evening when I am off work. I stand by my earlier comments made regarding ill-informed comments, in respect of the crew members.

Mr. Blake, if I may ask, what is your maritime background? Are you USCG licensed (unlimited HP/tonnage to run a ship like this as a Captain or Chief Engineer)? Have you sailed on large ocean going vessels? Do you have any experience with ship operations from a shore based perspective?

Before you make sweeping accusations about people screwing up, I would suggest we continue to read the news reports from people in the industry, including the USCG, who know what they are talking about.

[h=1]Body found during search for missing El Faro cargo ship -U.S. Coast Guard[/h]They found a heavily damaged life boat as well (holds 43 people) so doubtful they will find survivors. The USCG Captain stated waves up to 50'.

I understand the water in that area is quite deep, so if the ship went down fast, there might not be much left to find. Sad for the families of the crew.

Yes Mr Bill, common sense that is all. Plus I am a pilot that would check the long term forecast either boating or flying. If you would like to talk about this more I would gladly give you my phone number. 30 odd years flying and boating. Plus MR BILL, I know people with boating captains license that can't drive a 18 Boston Whaler. So WTF does that mean???? TELL ME! Get you GD head out of the sand!!

A reminder for us all!

We all go down to the sea in fragile ships - and we don't have to come home!

Pray for the crew and their families!
