That's a late 90s 330DA. Confirmed at 0:59m (note the 330 on the transom). That's a LOTTA boat to be towing with an Excursion. The boat, DRY, weighs about 11500lbs.

Said over sized load. Wonder if they had permits. Does any one know what your insurance will do if you pull too big a load for the tow unit.

I was thinking the exact same thing. You can be sure they'd be looking for a way out of paying, esp if there was negligence on the part of the owner, either in poor choice of tow vehicle/trailer or lack of escort (if Wisconsin requires one).

At least it was not a 1/2 ton.

Chould have had P Rated tire's on it! Bought it from a used car lot that made it look good by putting Passager car tire's on it like my truck did when I first got it. Now it has "e" rated.

This one will be interesting to watch to see how this plays out. I've always cautioned people about being fully legal when they're towing, and it's been for the "ship happens" moments like this one.

If you watch the video he has/had the wide load flag attached. Now as to if he had the permits that they dont say.

But im a firm believer after my incident that you make sure you have the proper equipment to tow the boat home.

Even at 11,000 rating "properly" equipped it is under rated for this boat. Dry weight alone is 500 pounds too heavy. Add 3500 or so for a trailer, plus 1000 or so for batteries, gear and fluids and he is pushing 50% over!! WAY TOO HEAVY and not a smart move.

Excursions are rated at 11,000 lbs properly equipped.

I intended to convey that sentiment with but had to run and didn't finish it. My 270 has a 6200 lbs dry weight but actually weighs over 8k. If the percentages hold, the boat weighs near 14,000 lbs then add the trailer at near 3k. This is likely worse than 50% over.

My 270 is basically at the limit of the Excursion... couldn't imagine having a 330 back there! The 12k lb limit (with 4.30 gears on the v10 and diesel 3.73's) on the Ex includes passengers, gear in the truck, etc..... no way the driver was within limits.

It's too bad we never get a follow up to these things so we know how it all ended. Insurance companies are paying out everyday for the dumb things their customers do, I'd be surprised if they didn't on this one.

We just don't know the whole story. Chould have been just going to fast, Kids acting up in the cab, another car screwed him, tire blew, Tie rod went or just plan old can't drive. We all know you can drive over the wieght limits and not crash, but you have to have exsperance and us your head, take extra care in what you do. No qiuck move's!!!

You nailed it. My 330 with a light fuel load and minimal water but packed with some food and clothes weighed in at 17,500 lbs on my triple axle trailer.

The report stated he blew a trailer tire. Another reason you do not want the "tail wagging the dog". If something goes bad, you need the weight and power of a proper tow vehicle.

MM - Do you know the total weight with the trailer? Or is that with the trailer? Just curious.

Thanks

I have to totally agree. My Loadmaster trailer is 2200lbs empty....add the 270DA with fluids and I'm at 11,000lbs or a bit more. I would not tow more with my Excursion. That 330 was sitting on a real nice trailer but he needed a F350, Mike.

Why does anyone think his insurance carriers wouldn't pay for the damage? Of course every policy is different and who knows what this guy has but assuming say a typical policy with on the SUV and the boat boat I can't imagine why it wouldn't pay up to its property damage limits if the damage exceeds. Stupidity for over weight towing is never an exclusion that I've seen. Without knowing the precise exclusion language there's no way to know. Anyone got their policy handy? Usually only "intentional conduct specifically designed to cause the loss" is not covered. Doubt the accident was intentional.
