Well, it looks like I sold my boat yesterday, pending survey and sea trial. As some of you know, I’ve been looking for a more fish-friendly boat for quite some time. With a little extra cash in my pocket, I can do some real shopping now. My boat was on the market for 16 days and I have an offer for full asking price. I sold her for exactly $1K less than I paid for her 4 years ago. Not bad. That’s pretty much free fun in my book. I guess that’s a testament to Sea Ray’s resale value. And if you take care of your boat, your boat will take care of you.

But now I’m thinking, “Oh, *&#$@%!!! What did I just do?” I’m boatless and spring has already sprung.” I guess that feeling will pass the second I cash the check and make a deposit on my next boat. (Now I just have to find my next boat…)

John,

What boat are you looking at as your replacement? Laguna? Amberjack? Non-searay?

I think a nice big Amberjack would be nice or a sundancer with a fisherman's package on it.

I won’t say this too loudly, but I’m looking at other brands. (Shhhhhh! Don’t tell.) I love the AJ’s but that’s just too much boat for me right now. With any luck, I’ll find a nice used Ebbtide or Grady or Whaler that will fit the bill. Whatever it is, it’ll have an outboard hanging off the transom.

John,

They made some nice 25' and 27' AJ's back in the day! they had 10' or 10'6" beams on them. Still trailerable. Won't have to completely empty your bank account!

That's AMAZING. Not only a testament to the resale value of a Sea Ray, but a testament to your negotiation skills when you bought the boat. It's an '03 and you've had it four years so I'm guessing you purchased it one-year old?

I am torn on whether to say congratulations or regrets, good luck in your search for your next vessel.

Henry - I'm in Beverly. My lawn is starting to get green, there are buds on the trees, and even a few flowers poking through. Looks like spring to me. It's a bit chilly today, but look at the forecast for Thursday. That just might be boatin' weather!

John - When I purchased my boat, she had about 12 hours on her. No magic. I bought her for a fair price. I've taken great care of her and she's worth every penny I'm selling her for. Comparable boats are selling (or at least trying to sell for) as much as $2.5K more than my asking price. It certainly doesn't hurt that a new 175 will run you $24K (MSRP.)
