Anyone have a good deterrent for birds landing and doing their business on the deck of my boat? We have a couple of owls but they do not seem to work very long. I have done a search here and found the rubber chicken but I am more interested in getting rid of seagulls.

Has anyone tried the foil tape? This looks the most promising.

It looks real goofy, but I have 3 CD's looped together with steel leader material and a huge rubber minnow with large eyes (old lost fishing lure I picked up on the beach) that I hang from scrub brush handle in the socket for the boat hook when we have this problem.

The handle adds about 5 ft to the height and the string of CD's is about 3' long. There is enough motion that gulls are afraid of it and fly around my boat. They learn and I can put the CD's away........then in about 30 days, they forget and I have to get them out for a do-over.

Be careful with what you use to deter gulls. They are a protected species........don't ask me, they are more plentiful and nastier than rats where I am.........I'm just telling you what the marine patrol guy told me when he saw the 12ga in my truck.

I use fishing line from corner to corner and a couple zig zags across the top of my lift canopy. Found that is the only deterrent they STAY afraid of. Not sure if you can set some up on your boat to help, but thought I'd throw in my 2cents.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am going to try the CD's and will rig something up and let you know how it works. Yeah saw the post on the sonic scrubber. Not sure an atomic scrubber could clean what I am dealing with.

I saw a wharf on the Potomac that had something like Christmas tinsil (sp) on half of it and a flock of sea gulls on the other side but could not find it on line.

Oh how do rolling papers scare the birds?

The horizontal surfaces are covered w/ rubber snakes. It works better than without.

Two are shown on my upper canvas, as is a small bird dropping.

They don't migrate very far here in the South either, from the marsh to my dock and whatever is on or around it, all year long.

I believe the term is "migratory."

Migratory or Predatory, either way - it's some such nonsense that I can go out and kill a raccoon, squirrel, deer, etc but not a flying rat that spreads its droppings and disease everywhere.

One option I was looking at (for non predatatory or migratory pests of course ) was this - http://www.airgunsbbguns.com/Benjamin_Sheridan_Super_Streak_177_or_22_Rifle_p/bnjb1122btm.htm

A 1500 FPS air rifle with a scope would pretty much take out anything - I've seen them on hunting shows take out wild boars with a single shot to the head. Pretty cool, and nearly silent, technology.

I'll probably never invest, but it's so fun to think about!

In reality, the ICW here is so busy with fast moving boat traffic, that the birds rarely make a visit here. My boat lift pylons are guano-free so far...

I have heard this also, supposedly gulls will not fly under lines, but who says they have to be under the line to poop?. They will just poop from higher up making larger spots.

That's called "predatory migration."

For you guys thinking about stringing your boat with monofilament line, consider what happens when the boat must be moved or moved in a hurry by others like in preparation for a storm/hurricane or for marina maintenace.

There is a newer 44DB in our marina and the owner strings the forward deck with monofilament to deter birds. It is always the last boat to get moved for a storm........and I will not move it. I move boats to help out am not paid to teeter around on a forward deck in 35-45 kt winds stepping around a monofilament mine-field.
