Seagull poop

I think a better idea is to make someone else's boat more attractive for birds... go sprinkle bird seed and rotten sandwich meat and crackers on the boat furtherest from yours... The "honey pot" theory.

What do you do when your boat is the furthest from someone else and they also use the "honey pot theory" on your boat?

Non-repetitive motion like CD's blowing in the breeze and anything with eyes that change position will deter gulls. Gary's owl demonstrates that anything that doesn't move is just a poop perch for a gull.

My parents had an issue the past couple summers with their new aluminum dock. They and their neighbor were loaded with sea gulls that left their calling cards... so bad, you couldn't hardly walk down on the dock. This summer, my father took his whirly-bird duck wind mill (the type with the wings that whirl in the wind - and the duck turns based on wind direction) on the end of his dock. And, no more sea gulls. His neighbor however still has them. The wings are just random enough in the wind, to make them nervous around it apparently.

If you look closely, you can see their calling cards on the neighbor's dock

Got back from work and could not believe the posts. We sure do love to talk about poop on this board. There are lots of great suggestions. Keep them coming.

Years ago I saw a very interesting contraption on a sailboat. They took a small motor (think very small water pump), and put an offset bar on the shaft. They mounted this on the side of a box (I think it was tupperware), that contained some rocks.
they hoisted this contraption to the top of the mast, and put a timing device on it where it would run for a second once every half hour or so. The rattle trap kept their boat and deck clear of seagulls, and more importantly, pelicans. I'd imagine it might be annoying late at night, but it was barely noticable during the day in the busy marina.

2 boats near me use the screeching seagull noise and on one of them the gulls made a nest the other one the gulls still land on his boat..These guys spent a fair bit of money.

funny enough one of them has the owl as well and I saw 2 gulls shagging right next to it.

Now for my boat (400db) they would land on the top of my canopy and crap all over the place. On the bow I used a reel with flags on them and that stopped them there,

I heard a story where they are using brown feather dusters to scare the gulls away so I went and purchased one and strapped it to my anchor light. I have not had one seagull land on my boat. The marina has been keeping an eye out for me and they are amazed. Every time I take my boat up the channel the seagulls attack my feather duster..cost me $17aud and its done the job

Stopped by my marina last night. The lack of boat traffic and noise has brought the gulls back in full force. There is a floating dock about 100' long by 4' wide that has gotten completely covered in about 1 week. Disgusting mess.

Has anyone tried keeping cats around the marina? Strays can be found everywhere. Maybe we should relocate a few of them.

I think that if you can get away with it, you should leave out some alka seltzer pieces wrapped in bread or find some cyanide corn. They make it for pest control. Those birds are a real health hazard...

A bird dumped on my car a while back and I didn't clean it off right away. This past weekend I decided to wash and wax. After washing I notice that the paint had been etched and even with rubbing compound I could not remove the etching. I didn't want to be too agressive and go thru the clear coat. I don't know what that bird ate but it sure was caustic to my cars' paint. I've also had to use Soft & Scrub to get some dumpings off the boat fiberglass. So I guess you must really watch and get the bird poop off soon otherwise you may have a permanate "reminder"!!

ah yeah, bird feces is highly acidic and will definitely etch your car's paint and probably do damage to anything else it hits if not cleaned off soon after.
