Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

Hi guys

quick update, spent the night on the boat, the water incursion is minor and i patched the leaks with epoxy that sets underwater.. Stayed and made sure everything was safe.. Insurance claim is underway, slipway booked..as of right now all damage seems to be cosmetic! Leaks are from the muffler where it joins the hull.. Took a hit on the rocks.
Divers under there right now with video, everything is underway. She is safe just a bit cosmetically beaten up... Everything so far is going well with insurnace etc... She will more than likely be up on the slip for the next few weeks.... She won't be left in the water with these leaks even though they are minor... Still don't have all the info.. Will post again tonight with pictures, video and an update..right in the middle of it all now.. What a great birthday present this is lol not how I envisioned spending this day..such is life right hahha

i know there has been a bit of speculating as to what is going on and what I have been doing...I have been up all night on the boat with my cousin making sure she does not sink or any further damage occurs...... Because of the time this happened I could not get her out of the water yesterday...the police just grabbed her pulled her off the wall and dumped her on a police mooring nearby ..I was out there ten minutes later :) Pretty exhausted.. Mine was one of 5 boats that ended up on that wall in this sudden freak storm... Will reply properly to everyone later on today ... Thanks for all the replies everyone :)

Hey Rob,

Good to hear everything is on track at least. Where have you got it booked in for the haul out? Shame it's going to be out of action for New Year's Eve!

Paul

It's been super hectic guys, will update soon...finally got insurance clearance she is being slipped monday or Tuesday... Proper update when I get back to the boat :)

Ian, you are awesome thanks so very much for the offer of help :) insurance is approved and she is up on the slipway as of this morn where she will be for the next few weeks...wow that is a monster of a boat, looks 3 x as big out of the water...it's a good thing she's out as the water incursion was increasing. The batteries etc were keeping up but still it's no way to have a boat in the water..the damage around the muffler was pretty bad it's amazing it only took on as much water as she did...ok proper update with pictures etc all tonight when I'm done with all the running around.

Hi everyone

I wrote a whole long letter with pictures and the works right after the boat accident and posted it up here around dec 17 but don't see it here... Must of either done something wrong or deleted it by mistake.

The boat has been on the slip since around DEC 16. She sustained around 50 k in damages from breaking the mooring line and being slammed into a concrete sea wall as well as bouncing around on top of a shallow reef puncturing holes in the bottom.
Insurance took over and she went on the slip a few days after the accident. I spent several days including my birthday staying aboard making sure she stays afloat until we could get her on the slip.
of the port side railing had to be replaced, the port windshield and frame. Along with a whole lot of bottom work for all of the holes and damage to the hull on the port side..
the running Gear did not get damaged. She is still at the repair dock as the repairer has been trying to find a Gunwhale " gunnel" and or rub-rail for her.. Apparently they do not make the old 1999 profile anymore and the insurance company will not pay for the starboard rub-rail to be replaced so it would match any newer style Gunwhale we may put in place on the port side.. This crappy plastic part comes to a total of nearly 6 k...
Does anyone have an idea where we would be able to find the old style Gunwhale for sale? We have called Sea Ray and they have not been able to help. we also talked to the original manufacturers "Tacomarine " who also can not help.. I figured if anyone knew where to find this part it would be people here on this site :) I have been in touch with FPmarine they may be able to help, waiting to hear back from them.
insurance company has really not been fun to deal with... I have to pay a several thousand dollar excess even though I'm not at fault which is not what I expected and now this nonsense. They are ready to give me back the boat with mismatched rub-rails unless I pay thousands of dollars, really pisses me off all of it! But I guess such is the way with insurance claims and companies they are infamous for these sort of dealings. They love to take your money but when it's their turn to pay they try everything in the book!
Otherwise everything is good with the boat and not much new as she sits at the repair dock awaiting these parts. I lost all of summer to sell her which is a pretty big downer but such is life right! I have one of the top brokers in the country ready to sell her when she is fixed. But going into winter it's not going to be easy to get her sold..

positive in all this, a fresh antifoul, brand new shiny railings and she looks fantastic well what's done on her anyways!
haven't posted much last year as I used the boat very little and did not have much I could tell.. Ever since my involvement with that boating biz attempt it's been a hard slog of things!

Either way I will eventually get her sold and get on with getting that sailing vessel I dream of and head off to join the cruisers community :) Still a few weeks to a month away from the boat having the repairs completed after that point I will be using her and will have things to write about like old times :)

Woody gave some good ideas on locating that rubrail in another thread " thanks for that woody"...calling around now to see if anyone has some old stock sitting around. Anyone got any other ideas?
attached are a few pics of the damage...there was holes under the waterline as well, will post after pics when the boat is done.

My bow thruster works for the first time in years lol...no growth to stop the spin...kinda nice, although it forced me to become a much better captain doing everything without thrusters was actually pretty good for advancing my captaining skills. Went through a few emergencies as well where I had to dock on only one engine and go home on one engine, all of these things while difficult at the time were great for captaining experience.

The repairers are really good and really super great people!! I can't believe it has taken 3 months! Not their fault, getting the parts from the USA and the insurance taking awhile has been the holdups. But seriously Ian if you ever need any slip work done These guys are the go, they truly have gone above and beyond in every way and the work they have done is simply amazing!
Really looking forward to her being done now! Just got back from the boat, really miss spending time on her!

Good to hear back from you Rob.

I hear you pain on finding parts for old boats. Sometimes it's just impossible. I needed some companion way parts on my old 400EC and they just simply weren't available anywhere anymore. Ended up having to have them fabricated.

Having different style rub rails on each side of the boat is going to be quite a red flag to potential buyers if it's obvious. Could make the boat hard to sell or force you to take a big penalty on price. Not sure if investing the extra money now to have the whole boat redone will pay back big on resale.

When you get the boat sold and go over to the dark side you need to post on CSR what forum you've gone to. If your new saga is anything like the journey you took here I'll be the first to subscribe and follow your shenanigans!!

Good Luck!

Cop my friend great to hear from you :) yes we are now looking into fabrication and or replacing all of the rub- rail with the new profile if I can not find the part. Mismatched rails would look terrible and I just can't do that.

i will be sure to let you guys know if and when I start posting new adventure stories on another forum or blog.. I will always be around and keep up with CSR either way :) I know I have not posted here for the last year but that was just because I really and nothing boating related to post as apart from a lot of maintenance and upkeep my boat was barely used last year.

how did the fabricated part for your 400 EC turn out, as good as an original ?

No, but way better that how it was working. Actually SR really missed the boat (get it?!! I kill me!) with the way the hatch worked on that boat. It really was terribly under engineered and no matter how good the replacement part was it was still going the be junky.

Rob, Good to see your posts but it is painful to see your baby all beaten up. Hope she is fixed and back on the water for you soon. Take care and best wishes as always.

Pyro! Great to hear from you my old friend! All of my old chat buddies are slowly showing up, I have missed all of you and this place. It's a funny thing, I have had the boat for almost 5 years now and never so much as put a scratch on her. Any and all damage that has ever occured was either other people of bad luck events like this one. Doesn't matter how careful you are with your boat somehow damage manages to happen.
Anyone know what the name is for the clear plastic part that covers the anchor light? Mine got smashed when the wind ripped the roof off which flapped up and broke that part... I would guess that is a one size fits all part and pretty easy to find...I have a plastic bag over my anchor light right now .

If the pole's not damaged you're probably better off just buying a new light that fits that pole diameter and getting an LED unit. I believe they're very reasonably priced.

The entire pole light and lense cover is a replaceable part. Check the Perko website or call them. But, sort of a disclaimer, their site is hard to navigate and difficult to locate things on, so perservere..............

Cop: thanks mate! Much better idea than what I have been up to, trying to locate just the cover, not an easy find.
fwebster: many thanks for that info and where to get it, persevering at the perko site is my next order of business !! Good to hear from you again :)
ian: will do, I will be at the boat tomorrow and grab that picture, thanks mate!

Well good news regarding the rubrail I contacted someone I have talked to through CSR a few years back that is high up within Sea Ray regarding finding the part. He has always been very nice and very helpful.
The very next day "today" Sea Rays representative here in Sydney contacted me and the repairer with the info on exactly where to get the part ! Really impressed with how quickly they solved the issue ! Gooooo Sea Ray :) so the rub-rail issue is now solved I don't have to dish out thousands of dollars to fix it.

Looking at another
Month or so until the boat is complete and fully repaired. Really miss using her, it has been three months now.. so looking forward to her being finished.
I have been running the engines several hours in total weekly just to keep them healthy while she sits. Really nice to have a fresh antifoul and not one weed growing on the bottom.

Have a great broker on standby who seems to be pretty confident with a relatively fast sale once she's fixed. Then onwards with the next adventure ..
