We closed on our boat today and was informed that the Sea Ray Legacy extended warranty was extended to 9 year old boats upon purchase

our S.R 2002 310 policy would cost around $5600.00 for a 3 year deal..

ANY THOUGHTS???

In my mind I would be thinking about what could break and how much it would cost to get it fixed. Will I spend that much money in 3 years? If the boat has been surveyed and came out in good shape, chances are you will not. Another thing to think about…..Several years ago my wife bought our first boat while I was away on a business trip (nice surprise). She bought a 03 240 Dancer, and at the time she paid a little over 2K for the Legacy Warranty. Well we sold the boat and upgraded before the first season with her was over, 2K down the drain.

Good luck with your new purchase, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Extended warranties are a gamble, and the cost/benefit analysis can be different for each of us. There are several threads discussing the issue, and I think it boils down to peace of mind and what you are willing to pay for a little of it.

As far as the pure math goes, it doesn't make sense. I suspect that an actuary somewhere (with LOTS of data at his or her disposal) has decided that the anticipated payout for your insurance is half or less of what you are paying for the product.

True about the average cost. They make money. On the other hand, your boat is not brand new anymore, and one failure in these things can make the cost of the insurance look really cheap really fast. If a $5000 repair bill the week before your big weekend on the boat doesn't make you shudder, then don't worry about it. If the thought of a surprise like that keeps you up nights, then go for it.

PS - You need to verify the period of coverage on that boat. If it's 3 years from the date of your purchase, I would seriously consider it. OTOH (again), consider who is providing the warranty and what is the liklihood that they'll be in business next year.

Bill,
I closed a month ago one mine. I was not offered extended coverage by my dealer but with that price tag I wouldn't have done it anyhow. As others have stated, the policy wouldn't be offered if Sea Ray thought statistically they would be paying more than $5,600 out over 3 years. What is covered? Mechanicals only, bow to stern including electronics? Is there a deductible? Is the canvas or eisenglass covered?

It all boils down to how risk averse you are and what peace of mind is worth to you. In my case I willing to live with the chance of a $5,000 repair in the next 3 years, if you are not, get the policy.

I am not sure what the Sea Ray Legacy is, but we had paid for the extended Passport Cruiser Class Warranty, and were denied every claim. However, on our window issue, Sea Ray came through after we were denied from Passport.

Passport is run by Brunswick the parent company of Sea Ray.

YES! I understand legacy is run by brunswick, also

backed by Sea Ray..what kind of claims did you have that they would deny????.pre -exsisting??? thats scary...:wow:

This is a Brunswick program just like the Passport programs. It is insurance underwritten by Brunswick and adjustors ("warranty claims experts") must approve every claim. That is where some folks run into trouble. Whomever you get to fix the boat must know who to "dance" with the warranty people. Everything from proof of need to timing of the repair is important...do it wrong and the claim is dissallowed. Knowing how to read the fine print is also critical to coverage. For example, if the dealer doing the service work, doesn't include the haul out in the repair estimate for replacing your leaking shaft seal, it won't be covered and you will be writing the check for that part of the bill. Generally, with the Legacy program you need to expect to take the boat to the SR dealer, instrad of Bubb's Boat Barn.

I can tell you that a good dealer with a track record of treating the warranty guys fair and not gouging them, and one who has the staff to handle the additional paperwork and hoops that must be negotiated can make the warranty pay off. Our dealer sells the warranty on almost every new boat and I have yet to know of a single owner who didn't come out ahead...........one reason why is the cost to repair newer electronic engines can be expensive. One guy with a 2006 gas 360DA had 2 injectors fail at different times and the repair bill for parts and labor for both totaled $2100. That is for 2 relatively minor electronic parts.

Hope that helps...........

:thumbsup:Thanks frank....YES!!
.We were offered the contract from the S.R. dealer at Marine Max, where we bought our boat , they service sea rays
we would have it repaired there if be.need be, we do feel comfortable with them

YES you were a help ...

You have a 2002 with V-drives. I don't know how many hours you have on the boat, but 1 transmission with haul-out, labor and parts can cost $5K+.

YEAH !!! right...:wow: we have 415 hours

Thanks..

I think that big decision maker should be how well do you know your boat and how much can you fix yourself to keep the cost down. Looks like we have same engines, although I've heard many good things about 5.7s, but the new MPIs have much more electronics installed on them, which do go bad periodically. I've had couple of sensors that went bad. For some folks, myself included, this is a learning curve, but I'm the type of guy who doesn't mind to get my hands dirty. So, if you have limited knowledge and prefer to write checks, then warranty is another check with sense of security. Otherwise, save the money. With different opinions here I still think that there's a lot that can be fixed for $5600. Just keep in mind that there's always something that will break, just b/c it's mechanical item, which is used and exposed to marine enviroment.

Just my .02c

:smt001 Thank You......Your 2 cts is well accepted....

With an older boat, that may need a new exhaust system, raw water pump and belts, a warrantee is probably not a good investment because it does not cover these times... I would take the $5,600 and put it toward preventative maintenance... With a used boat the infant mortality repairs are not a problem, and most of the repairs will be routine maintenance that is not covered. With a new boat a warrantee is probability a good "investment" with a used boat probably not...

Can you post the list of exclusions where you saw that exhaust parts are excluded from the Legacy or Passport programs? I need to send it to my dealer ....he's doing something wrong to have that pile of manifolds and risers out back labeled "warranty".

For those connnnsidering either the Legacy program or Passport, be sure you read the list of exclusion before your cancellation date.

Don't forget about the other none engine related stuff that is covered. Hot water heater, AC unit, ice maker, refrigerator. These items can be expensive to repair. We purchased the Legacy Warranty and so far have had it pay out pretty well, haven't gone over the top yet but we are getting there. Nice thing about it is, we work with a dealer and they take care of everything. They know the paperwork hoops to jump thru, what is covered, what is not covered and just get the stuff done for us. We have replaced the hot water heater, several sensors, (one of the engines but that was covered under the Mercury warranty) bilge pump including labor, among other stuff which I can't think of right now (don't have the paperwork). Like Frank said, if you work with a dealer that knows the in's/out's of the warranty, it CAN be a good deal. All failures are not only the engine. Hell, a new windlass is expensive to replace as well. That is also covered. Lots of stuff not covered but look at the stuff that is covered as well.

It is basically a warranty. We bought our warranty with the boat in March. We had already done the survey and I went over the survey with the service manager on what could be replaced under the Legacy warranty that was on the survey. Once deal was complete, we put in the claim for warranty work to be done on the boat for the stuff on the survey. Worked out well right out of the gate. Windshield vent motor and hot water heater before we even took our first trip with the boat.
