Rescue Efforts under way for teen sailor

Thats it !! Let it all out on how you really feel. :smt001

Just my personal opinion, but, I think everybody should just step back and think how you would feel right now if this was your child out there, does not matter if she should have or her parents should have let her, she is there, she is in trouble, she needs help, the only help we can give from here is prayers, so give them freely. Please do that to try and help since it is all that you can do.

I can't even begin to imagine how she feels right now. Sorry if you think I was making fun, I'm really not. To me it just seems totally crazy that it's even happening, and we know about it. I've been following both girls on their voyages, it's truly sad that this is happening.

Abby Sunderland EPIRB activated

EDIT: Sorry, please reply to this thread

I know this is not a sailing forum.

The 16 year old California girl that is attempting to set a world record for youngest solo navigator to sail around the world is in a storm between Africa and Australia, just over ½ way around the world from her start point.

She is in a storm with 30 foot swells and is not responding to communication.

An EPIRB emergency distress beacon has been manually activated. This beacon is transmitting the location of the beacon.

I’m keeping my hopes up for her.

Well. . . .

. . either she survived the inital incident and knows that help is merely a few days away;

. . .or she didn't survive the initial incident, and she is not suffering.

I guess the EIPIRB would give you alot of hope that you won't be waiting to starve or dehydrate in 60' seas: Afterall, with this technology you can get rescue mobilized within hours of the incident.

It's probably an enabler for lots of similarly crazy activity.

When asked for Emergency Contact information, I do know people who put down "911".

You drunk again?

I agree with Midway....There's enough blame to go around but it doesn't matter. What matters is that a brave young lady is in trouble and help is DAYS away, not hours. Her will and ability to survive has been and hopefully, will continue to be challenged in ways we can never imagine or want to experience.

Let us hope and pray that her will is strengthened by our prayers. When its all over, there'll be plenty of time to ask WTF were the parents thinking?? But for now, I say, "Hang on girl, help is on the way."

the boat is still afloat, the epirb that activates at 15ft of water hasn't gone off.

I beleive we put so much trust in technology these days that we loose sight that we are human. Nothing can happen to us because we have GPS and a dozen other acronyms to keep us safe. I will pray for this brave soul and her parents too. I know what it's like to loose a child and wouldn't wish it on any parent. All I'm saying is let remember we are human and vulnerable. Gentle breeze and calm seas until your found little one.

I followed her brother almost every night when he made his attempt and the same with Abby....As I did with Jessica Watson......To make judgement on whether letting both kids go for their dream is misinformed.....All three are very capable sailors and young adults who are way beyong their years.....All three have a "gift". The parents gave each child, whether you agree or not, whether right or wrong every opportunity in the safest sailboat with the best support staff to reach their dream....Maybe your child has a gift to go to college at 15, or can fly a plane at 14 or can move to canada at 13 to play hockey, etc. Those kids were more prepared and better sailors than 90% of the adults on the water today.....We will all have our opinions as I dont think Obama had any experience to be President of the United States.......Would I let my kids go to sea at 16 if they had the passion and experience.....I dont know the answer to that.....I know I would never be as articulate and mature at those 16 year olds in front of the tv cameras...They are well beyond their years and have a very special gift and passion.....They were all in a safer position than our 16 1/2 year olds taking a car out at night and being on the road.....Abby had the best equipment and back ups on back ups and hopefully she will be found still on the boat or in the life raft.....Sailboats do much better than powerboats in heavy seas....

That's wonderful news that she was found ok! What an ordeal, I can't imagine what she, or her family has gone through these long hours.
I'm really glad this story will have a happy ending, she seems like a great kid.

Wasn't you that spurred my post, I understood yours completly.

At least prayers have been answered in a good way, she has been found alive and well.

I will say that at that age my daughter would have tried something like that if she had the equipment and ability, heck she was stubborn enough, which she got a double dose of from myself and her mother, we could have woke up one morning and found her gone on her voyage. I truly cannot say what I what I would have done had that came up with her.

I think it's pretty great that Quantas supplied a plane to go make contact.

Father's quote from BBC - "We've got our Abigail back and the quest will be over," he said. "Knowing that she's alive and well means so much more to me than any sailing record. It's just a huge, huge relief."

So glad she is alive, but that quote, albeit taken out of context by the press I imagine, gives me some insights into the thinking of the parents. A sailing record is more important then....what??? It seems to me to be your daughter's safety and well being... Shameful...

I followed Zach's adventure daily too. My thoughts hold true for his case too... Just that his turned out better. Hopefully the Sutherland's media tour will help offset some of the rescue costs now.

Thank GOD she is OK and this story has a happy ending.

Glad she's OK. Brave kid with an apparent gift.

I think the parents are taking an unfair hit in popular opinion and I tend to agree with WetPaint.

When I told my dad that I registered him as the contact info for my beacon, I was met with a very long pause... "Why? I don't know who to call" "No dad, they call you" "Why? what am I supposed to do about it 3000 miles away?" "Ummm... I guess so you can worry some more in your life? Kind of like the time when the sheriff called you to let you know I almost hacked my leg off with a machete while you were on vacation". "Great, thanks"

Believe me I know exactly what you mean! Just keep doing things as you are, my dad was the same way.

As to this young lady, I am all for her and others like her and yet against at the same time. I will probably ranckle some gills her, but any costs involved should be paid for by the parents. She is still a minor, and if her parents want her to do this, then they should have been shadowing her.

Suppose some rescue personnel lost their life trying to locate her all in the name of some record. If one wants to break a record, obtain sponsors and necessary support avenues beforehand.

We truly have turned into a nation of over-protective sissy-raising parents.

Neil Armstrong had his pilot's license and was doing cross country flights solo in an airplane before he had his driver's license.
