Rescue Efforts under way for teen sailor

That's nuts. the nearest boat is 400 miles away!!! that's a lot of floating time.

What are parents thinking? This is BS in my opinion to let a minor take on a feat like this...But I do hope she is okay.

I agree also... if not her parents, somebody else should prohibited her from challenging the mighty ocean!!:smt013

There is some family history--her Brother circumnavigated at 16 or 17 years of age.

I'd never allow my kids to try this at that age.

I hope they find her alive. :smt001
They shouldn't have let her go in the first place. She still a little girl at 16yrs old. :smt021

Wow yea this is sad. I hope she's ok. I followed Jessica Watsons Solo trip she just finished up 2 weeks ago. http://www.jessicawatson.com.au/
Abby had put in for repairs not to long ago.... and had stopped when I quit keeping up.

I agree. My wife is downright PISSED at the parents (and was as soon as the voyage was undertaken) and wants them prosecuted.

Anyway, my prayers are with her.

What I DON'T understand is all the vague information coming from the media. "Somewhere in the Indian Ocean"??? An EPIRB broadcasts your exact lat/lon within minutes of activation. Don't they know EXACTLY where she (or the beacon) is??? I realize she is probably out of range for a rescue chopper, but why can they not launch a rescue plane that could at least scope out the situation and drop supplies if needed?

The risks of this undertaking were all too real. That's why it's usually atempted by only the best and most experienced sailors in the world. There's no substitute for experience- and there's no substitute for age to get that experience. I don't care if she'd been sailing since the age of six...it's still a drop in the bucket.

I hope, for the sake of her parents as well, that this ends up OK. Were I them, I could never forgive myself if it doesn't.

I too am a parent.

Rather than place blame, I chose to close my eyes, bow my head and ask God to keep this young lady safe and free from harm. And I will do so daily until she is found.

The sad part is they knew they left at a bad time. That the Indian ocean would be dangerous right now. What pushed them to go anyways was because they want to beat the Aussie by a few months in age. Sad Sad. Can you imagine floating in the Indian ocean in 60' waves at night knowing people are days away? And you thought boating was expensive. Can you imagine what her therapy bill is going to look like... IF she survives.

I just read that they have arranged for a passenger plane to re-route and fly over her last location and try to make radio contact with her. CRAZY. "Hey Abby, this is Quantas Airlines... How are you doing? It'll be a couple of days before a boat can get to you. Ok, Off to London" "Passengers, if you look out your left windows, you'll be able to see Abby Sunderland floating in the water".

the more I read, the more nuts it seems. I can't believe this goes on.

When I told my dad that I registered him as the contact info for my beacon, I was met with a very long pause... "Why? I don't know who to call" "No dad, they call you" "Why? what am I supposed to do about it 3000 miles away?" "Ummm... I guess so you can worry some more in your life? Kind of like the time when the sheriff called you to let you know I almost hacked my leg off with a machete while you were on vacation". "Great, thanks"
