On my '89 Merc 5.7s I have two small relays mounted above the fuel filter housing, directly below them is mounted the Mercathode unit. There is a red reset button located beside them. What do these relays do? At first I thought they were part of the Mercathode system, but I realize now they are not. Are these starter relays?

Hello, I do have a Question for you, Does number 33 in this link below look like solenoids that are on your boat?

If so, they are only showing one starter solenoid in this link, along with only one in the service manual from what I can see.

If you really can see two solenoids under there, Is there enough room to see what color wires are going to each solenoid?

It's been awhile for me, Because I mainly see newer boats now, But I do believe I can remember that it's kind of tough to gain access under that insulator cover.

I have two relays, a start and run relay for the ignition.. they are about 1" square...

Yes, yours should definitely have two Relays if your engine is EFI. One is for the ignition system and the other is for the fuel pump.

They will look like number 33 in this link.

But you also have number 5, And that is for your starter solenoid.

I will have to check to see how many relays are there, could be only one and yes it looks like the diagram. So this is a starter solenoid? I assume it sends power to solenoid mounted on the starter itself?
