Refigerator Replacemet and Cockpit Sliding Doors

Let's just say for the sake of argument, that the fridge is getting replaced and we need to remove the cockpit doors. How do we get the doors off?

Can I suggest coming at this from another direction. Concenscious by many who tried, is not to remove the door. If you still have the old unit take the front door and cooling unit off to scope out the job. If is as simple as suggested, measure the parts to make sure they will all fit through the door. Now here comes the tough part, how do who feel about taking apart your perfectly good and working new unit, and reassembling in the salon?

just food for thought

That is exactly what I said we were going to do if it doesn't fit through the door. I can take apart the fridge and reassemble it much easier than I can take off the helm and the windshield.

Who would have thought that the stupid fridge would be such a source of frustration.

We have put thousands into the boat so far this year, and we haven't even put gas in it yet! But all that pales in comparison.

Fridge arrives next week..... I will let you know if we got it installed or bought a new boat :)

Guitars, have you pulled the fridge out all the way yet? if so, take some measurements of the unit MINUS the doors, then measure your cabin door opening with the doors all the way open. If I'm right, you have the double doors that slide together right?

Yes, and yes. It looks like without the doors on the fridge it will fit....will have to do some fancy maneuvering to get the compressor through....but like I said, we can always remove the compressor and be really careful getting it through. Im just going to do a lot of praying in the next few days.

The doors being taken off the fridge shouldn't be a problem...

Yes... I'm hoping all we have to do is take the fridge doors off. The general consensus is that the cabin doors have to come off. That's too much trouble.

It looks harder than it really is, If I'm right, it's just a matter of unscrewing about 8-12 screws and wiggling the doors out of their pockets, then just re-assembling them after the fridge is placed in the cabin. Download a parts manual off the SR website (it's free) and do your searching there on how it goes together.

Guitars, taking the cabin doors off, if they're set up like mine, is only about a 10 minute job to remove them.

Removing the doors was a different process and exclusive to each of the 7 differend SR's I have owned, one easy some difficult and one almost impossible. Unfortunately I cannot speak to the 380, I hope yours is an easy one.

I'm not sure if Art meant this in his post (just read) but as one who just went through all this I took it as take apart the bad fridge and see how you feel about taking apart a brand new one. I would not count on taking apart any of the cooling unit, mine came as one assembly and it's a handful. You unfold it very carefully and do not bend or kink, you need six hands when your not trying to move it. On mine you either remove the whole CU or nothing. I'm not trying to scare you ,take the info for what it's worth and I hope it works out for you both.

I just replaced the Norcold on my 380. Remove the access panel over the top of the cockpit door. Remove the screws holding the door panels to the trucks at the top of the door. Remove the screws holding the door panels to the bottom rails. Then, remove the door panels. I took the old refrigerator out in pieces...removed doors, hinges, cooling unit, compressor, etc.

Getting the new unit in is not impossible. You will need to remove the compressor from the back of the refrigerator box (do not disconnect the cooling hoses). Next, move the compressor (carefully so as not to break the cooling hose) to the top of the refrigerator, and hold it there (or tape it to the top of the fridge). Remove the front isenglass. Remove the doors from the new refrigerator and the hinges. Remove the grab handels in the stairway. Lower the refrigerator from the top of the door, down the stairs, and into the salon. It took 4 guys to lower it in...2 at the top on the outside of the boat, handing it to 2 at the bottom, inside the salon.

When you reinstall the compressor, you will have to move it in towards the center of the refrigerator box in order for the compressor to clear the bulkhead along the back wall of the refrigerator hole cavity.

PM if you need more info.

Well, the new refrigerator is installed. It took 10 minutes to get the cockpit doors off and 15 to get them back on because the screws were tricky. Two men to lift the fridge, took doors off the fridge. Took an hour.
