We went down to our Longboat Key house this weekend for the first time since the red tide started. Our canal had a few dead fish but no smell of any sort. We went out boating and was shocked at how few people were out - one boat at a sandbar where there would normally be a hundred or more. The whole thing is very sad. The loss of sea life and business revenue is terrible.

We cancelled our trip to Sanibel later this year due to red tide. Decided to go to east coast instead. :(

We were at Don Pedro island and a friend works at a rental agency and they have lost over $70k in rentals for the year. We noticed it the most on the beach side, but the canals were not nearly as clean as they usually are. Also, it would change hourly. At low tide, we took kayaks and it was fine, as the tide started to come in, the canal started to smell.

I'm heading to Cape Coral Friday, I was just there two weeks ago and the Caloosahatchee was like boating in RootBeer. I was on the Ohio River this past weekend and the water looked much much better.

Been there for 5 years and brown has always been the color.

I've owned in The Cape for 3 years and I agree to a point, before the red and the big O releases it would green up nicely once west of the 101 GICW marker. last year it didn't green up until about the Sanibel Causeway but this year??? It's just a mess all the way down to Love'sKey. Well likely brown farther south but that is as far as I've boated from The Cape recently. I've heard it's brown as far off coast as 10 to 12 miles

Guys, I am headed to Anna Maria Island for a long weekend in about 10 days, not on the beach and not on a canal, do you think it is gonna stink? I really hate the smell of dead fish and we keep hearing more and more about cancelling trips etc.

Arrived on Marco Island this morning. The beaches and water look clear. The local news reported that Tropical Storm Gordon seems to have pushed the effects of the Red Tide offshore. They also reported the local fishing has already improved.

actually the Lake O releases have only been happening since the 40's. The 101 is at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee. I've got limited experience down in these waters having only put about 3800 miles on the GPS since 02-2016 but the Pine Island Sound is usually green as is Punta Rassa and the back side of Matlacha. Hoping is clears up soon though.. I'll be boating down there in 48 hours either way

I was in SW Cape last week and our canal behind the house looked fine. water was high, but looked and smelled fine. Went to four Mile Preserve and checked out the green blue algae.

I thought when he said green he meant clean. I'm off countryclub by 47th terrace

Me?? I meant green as in the beautiful emerald green of the Gulf... not the cyanobacteria green.. How are the canals up your way? You are up the Canal under Del Prado then?

Gotcha on the green now, Dunno about my canal, not there, hope it's gone by Dec. I do go under Delprado

Actually no. Red tide has been happening since the beginning of time. Lake O releases have been happening after the locks were built in the 40,50's.

Both are bad. But it is not some big sugar lobbying government issue.

The only "monkeying around" with the environment is the corp of engineers. They are guilty of trying to be controllers of nature.

We have decided to cancel our annual Christmas - New Years trip to Cape Coral, not totally because of the red tide but it had a big part in the decision making.

I have one of my twin daughters getting married in Cape Coral on the water in March... It sounds like good news ...things are clearing up... We were a bit worried. The other twin is getting married this weekend.... Right in boating season... You can guess which one is my new favorite :)
