Red Tide

Been all up and down the canals here in The Cape and have seen zero blue/green algae. Boated to FMB twice and the water was actually looking better. We have had a good consistent wind from the east which I think is helping. The local news is saying the beaches have cleared up on Sanibel and Captiva but I'd still be suspect of the Microcystin in the sand. Tarpon Point Yacht Club looks good as well.

Thanx for the update. We are coming down for the FLIBS at the end of the month & will be scooting over to the gulf side for a few weeks after that, so we are quite concerned about the red tide situation as we want to spend some time at the beaches, etc.

Thanks Daniel! We thought we would be at Tarpon Point Tuesday, but the Gulf looks nasty. We are 120 miles above Mobile at Bobby's Fish Camp. Planning on Panama City Beach Sunday afternoon, but the Gulf looks 6-8' all week so we will enjoy PCB for a while.

We are typically well north of the Red Tide affected areas, but get a little nearly every year in the Panama city Beach area. This year has been different. We had "moderate" readings for the last 2 weeks then it all but cleared. Since Tuesday, the Red Tide as come and gone almost like tide changes. Some days you cannot go outside; others you feel no effects. We have a front passing Monday with E and SE winds expected to be 20-25 kts and seas 7-13 ft depending upon how the front matures as it nears........can't wait to see how that effects the Red Tide.

Carter....see you guys Sunday!

Thanks for all the advice, we ended up having a great trip, despite the water. Averaged about 4 miles a day of walking beaches on a number of keys and beaches. Did our swimming up on Honeymoon key, but did wade in and shelled down on Longboat key. A few dead fish there and water was a little cloudy, but no smell we noticed.

1x more day until AMI for us! Maybe storm Michael will help rush up the flushing out of the red tide. Hoping the weather will clear up by Friday.

have a friend took video last weekend there at beach and was clear water, no brown, no dead fish or smells!

enjoy!

We rolled into AMI late last night. Just came back from condo shopping over around Perico Bay, and Palma Sola area.
Color of the water is not the usual gorgeous color, it looks like tea. Still a touch of nasty smell. Was hoping the hurricane would "flush the toilet" a lot more in this area...spread out and decimate that algea bloom. Hopefully over the next few days it will help get rid of it. About to hit Publix to load up our kitchen and then hit the beach (Probably Bradenton ...my favorite spot is lower Bradenton Beach by the piers that separate it from Coquina). See what the beach itself is like.

Michael still worked the water and beaches here pretty good from reports..

testing in next day.. will see

unfortunately... extra run-off may sustain the bloom "they" say

Just next to the north pier 'tween Brandenton Beach and Coquina last night, the stench was strong, my wife was coughing for at least an hour after we tried to do an evening walk on the beach. The sea foam (spume) was pretty heavy. We'll probably go try up north end, around Bean Point today. Maybe the stronger currents from Tampa Bay will have the algae bloom kept away more. Sea foam, aka spume, happens when the surface of the water is churned up a lot and the water is high in biomatter/organic content. So...you'll often see it when the wind is high, and there's an algae bloom happening, I've seen it up in CT and RI too.
