Recap of our first year

Nice tale about how you two evolved into a boating couple, each capable of driving the boat and knowing what to do at the appropriate time.

Good job, and a great writeup. Thanks.

When my wife and I bought our first boat, I was 21 and she was 20. I grew up on a boat and she did not. I remember backing the boat in the water and just verbally telling her

"turn the blower on for a few minutes, it's just like a car, turn the key to start it and this is forward and reverse. After I park the car, just come up to the dock real slow, use reverse to stop you"

We both were so young and hard headed, it's amazing we went back ever again. Been boating 25 years and def brought us closer

Great job on the engine compartment! Mine has grey gelcoat and it never seems to impress as much as the lighter shades. Shortly after cleaning years of gunk and dirt, I blew a trim hose and everything got re-coated with dirt and oil.

I think I saw position data on your VHF - well done!

Your tab buttons are rockers... how did you press up and down at the same time? Are you saying one side up while the other side down?

Thank you. I figured out how to connect the chart-plotter to the VHF radio using NEMA 0183, meaning they are direct wired with no additional equipment. I even got and entered into my radio a FREE DSC MMSI number from USPS, United States Power Squadron, which might be the last place giving MMSI certificates without a fee.

You are correct on the trim tabs. The tabs are controlled by two rocker switches. I don’t know about larger vessels, but smaller vessels like mine share one hydraulic pump for both tabs. The two rocker switches allow you to control the trim tabs independently. However, pressing one rocker switch up and the other down at the same time causes the fuse to blow. Its not a big deal, but was the cause confusion the first time.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever done that to find out! If you find yourself adjusting the tabs often, look into a controller. Some boats don't need it, but on other boats it makes a huge difference.

Nice write up. Now that the marina is pulling boats my wife feels it’s time to learn how to back the boat out and navigate the channel. Less boats = less people to watch her pilot the “barge”.

You owe me a box of kleenex.

(Great story, I just read it to the Admiral, and there isn't a dry eye in the house. Glad your Dad was able to experience it.)
