Rebuilding 390 EC Cockpit Seating

I'm not intimately familiar with the seat construction techniques in the Sea Ray, but I am very familiar with rebuilding boat seat. Here are some photos and tips I've learned along the way.

I rebuild the seat frames with marine grade plywood. Marine grade plywood is not waterproof and some people think, it is just a better grade of plywood with no voids. I find it more stable to work with. I make all the pieces, fit them together and screw and glue (with waterproof glue) the seat back frames together.

For the curved seatback itself I like to use the FRP Fiber Reinforced Plastic wall board material made for shower walls. It is waterproof, it saws on a table saw nicely and trims well with a router or rotozip tool. Since it is fiber reinforced it is very strong and not prone to cracking. I fit the piece, screw it on and then trim it to fit perfectly.

After I finish the fabrication I take the FRP seatback off and paint the wood with a good Latex Exterior Paint. (Not Shown) And then reassemble.

This is a comparison of what I started with and the final (less paint) finished replacement.

Good Luck,

Hope this helps,

I have no experience in doing fiberglass work... but I can suggest to use polyethylene StarBoard panels to redo the wood&vynil s in the cockpit. It worked fine for me!

I wish that my boat was a year or two newer as my seats do not curve like this and my seat bases are made of wood instead of fiberglass. Another thing that ticks me off is the weird angle of my seat backs. They should not be raked back so much. The should be more erect or vertical.
