Raymarine sucks!

Ahhhhh .... the DEC PDP-8 and 11 Days ... wow, 8" floppies with 64K capacity WAHOO, Programers had to right elegant code in those days.

Today's a programmers can't print "CAT" in less that 6 gigs of code.

I still have customers with Vmails running DOS on a 286.

I met a guy at cocktail party a few weeks ago that's a big time computer "geek" (that's what I call everyone that knows more about computers than me; which is REALLY everyone!).

Anyway, he travels worldwide (currently in Canada) and recently spent two years in Russia designing/implementing systems to bring their banking system into the 21st century. Truthfully, a lot of what we discussed was a bit over my head- but what I was really amazed with is that they still used the DOS OS.

Dan-
The compass (unless it's an electronic one with a heading sensor) is not interfaced with the autopilot.
Which AP do you have? There is a procedure for aligning the heading sensor that would be covered in the manual. But since this is a brand new boat, I assume the electronics were installed by your dealer- so this is their problem- you should call them. I believe this is most likely a setup/installation issue, not a RM hardware issue. AP installation/setup is probably the most involved of all marine electronics...

TOBNPR:

The AP I have is the ST8002 model. The dealer mentioned the same thing, that they are going to have to come out and take the boat out on the water and go through the programming sequence again.

Thanks for the help.

Dan

Dan,

After they spin your boat around a couple hundred times, and the heading sensor still does not keep the proper configuration, save yourself ALOT of time, money and headaches and install the KVH unit. Myself and others have all experienced your pain with the raycrap. Good luck.

Which KVH system do you have....it is this one?

That's the same KVH I have.... great product.

Even though the raymarine does not generally point in the right direction, it does have one advantage... it costs less.

Ok, it says to mount in a magnetic, metal free area, at the water line and in the center of the boat. Well, I am in a 320 and there aren't many places that meet that criteria. So, where would one mount such a device to help eliminate magnetic effects on the device? ER, well lots of iron there so I wouldn't think so, under the helm, well to close to the other electronics and wiring harnesses....anyone have an idea on ideal mounting location?

Tow it in your dinghy on a 100' line.

Not the same as your boat, mine is located on the bridge, centerline under the helm, works fine, but is not "per installation instructions".

Mine is also on the bridge under the front bench seat... works fine. Of course, compared to the Raymarine, a clipped toenail floating in a cup of water would be a better compass.

buy the same product. switch out the defective part. return product. get your $$ back pretty simple to me:smt038

It's a defective design... not a defective part.

And your ethics (and advice) are defective. I'm guessing you work in Washington?

Hey Jim: Don't let this clown buy anything from you.

LOL... u can return till ur blue ... same crap...( junk in junk out )

my 34 had the heading sensor in the salon floor.

44 is mounted in the dash.

Like posted i have same KVH. Like Gary said its even cheaper then the rayjunk...AND IT WORKS

Rob

Might as well add diesels when you remodel the 320 :smt043

Don't want diesels...sorry. Little to much maintenance for me at this time and cost of ownership is just not effective. Once I retire, definately, but not right now. Don't have time to do the maintenance and run them enough for it not to cost me more than they are worth. You know.

Sorry i just need to vent:smt013

I have a Raymarine 210 Radio, the mic is bad but the radio works perfect. You can not find a replacment mic anywhere! They do not carry them anymore and no other ones are compatable(unless you know otherwise)

I called Raymarine and they said I could send it in and they could fit a mic to it. But **** thats going to cost as much as a new radio. So now i have to spend money on a whole new radio...then i have to deal with retro fitting it in the old hole in the dash..grrr
And I had heard it was only there customer service that sucked.
I thought everybody bought icom radios

Hmmmm. Thats why they call it a "Hobby". Look at the tools you work with. Do you spare expense here. I spare as much expense I can with my hobbies, but work with the best of tools. Example Snap On vs Craftsman....Need I say more. My boats not even in the water yet and I am trying to cut cost. Plus what I don't spend on myself, even wastful, I'll be taxed on.....Ever seen a herse with trailer hitch....Thats my 47 cents worth.
