Hi,
For the first time, I'm attempting to flush my raw water system on my QSB 5.9's. My question is, can I pipe a hose to the downstream port (1/4"NPT fitting just past the impeller) and run fresh water through the system without running the engine? I started doing this, but got paranoid because of the turbo system.
If I can't do that, what is the correct procedure?
Thank you for your assistance.

When I was winterizing my boat, prior winterizing the engines, I would flush them with fresh (city) water. I made a sea-strainer cap with garden hose fitting. It worked like a charm.

I wouldn't attemp flushing the engines without running them. After all, as part of the excersise, I'd like to flush as much parts with fresh water as possible.

Here's the link, scroll to my post 322 to see the pic.

I've flushed my QSB's in my 2005 390DA this way and it works just fine PROVIDED the riser system is adequately designed in that gravity is working for you AND in the right direction. Said another way, you don't want to have water from your exhaust shower head feeding water directly into the turbo exhaust.

To me, why take the chance? There are several other ways to do this... yes the other alternatives might cost some $.... but you take a huge risk running water through very expensive mechanical systems. Worst case, just put the garden hose directly into the strainer and let the water run over the top. Start the engines and the impeller will take what it needs. You'll also flush the bilge.

That's what I did before I made the sea-strainer cap with adapter for garden hose. I just prefer the cap, knowing that this will maximize the fresh water supply.

I put the hose right into the strainer and it worked well. I also tried my father-in-laws sea flush connected to a 5 gal bucket. Preferred hose right in strainer to sea flush for fresh water but did use the sea flush system for pink.
