Guys ,
I cant find the franks post on the micron size on the primary's. Id swear it was 30 primary 2 micron secondary??

Please refresh my memory...

Thanx in advance

Rob

30 microns is right for use with Caterpillar high efficiency secondary filters. I don't know why 30's won't work for Cummins as long as your secondaries trap at 2 micron particle size.

Wes / Frank

Thanx so much. I got a engine issue going on. Once it gets resolved ill post.

thanx again

Rob

Rob, I am on my second year with 30 micron filtration in the racors and consistent use of biocide/power service diesel kleen and use of high volume diesel retailers. I have put 95 hours on this year and gone through a commensurate amount of fuel and the racors bowls look good and the mains run strong.

Ditto on what Dave said (that would be a double ditto on Skip and triple ditto on Frank)

Well here's my issue.

I have a issue at idle where my stb motor hunts up and down 10 rpm's.

When under load the stb motor lags behind the port motor. ( only lsightly ) then around 750 rpms there's a vibration that i thought was a dinged prop ( not the case ) they can simulate all this at the dock in neutral. ( so hence not the prop ) Cummins came down charged retarded money for travel time , mileage and fuel surcharge . almost seven hundred dollars for 45 mins on the boat . they changed prim and secondary fuel filters. Boat ran fine. They hooked up there computer and shut down each injector then mulitple injectors. They said all ok . Just clogged filter. They stated I should havea 10 micron in the primary slot. I was like ok but at the captains thingy u said 30 microns . they leave I take to boat out and she runs great. 2 hrs later... not so great. I change both filters and still runs like poop! Marina guys all come down. , big meeting they call cummins again ... they hook up there computer boat runs fine. WTF .... can them plugging in there lap top in any way erase any troube codes or anyting ? So now the boat runs fine. Everyone is scratching there heads which cares me . So That weeknd I take the boat to riverhead aprox 4 hr ride... the problem came and went a few times . ( its only apparent at slow speeds ) So now they think i have a bad coil on one injector but they dont know which injector. So i guess i have to wait for total failure???

So to be continnued... Pass any hints on im pretty eager to put this to bed.

Thanx

Rob

Sorry, I'm no help on this one. All my experience is with mechanical engines that don't require computers and coils to fire a cylinder.

Sorry, Rob, I couldn't help it.............

I think your guys are probably on the right track. However, I also believe their posture is wrong on charging you. They didn't fix the engine, so they should eat the bill, less filters, which you will get some value from. Where I come from, we pay for results when we are charged $100+ per hour. You were charged for guessing....if they want to get paid for their time to guess wrong, then it should be at a substantially reduced rate. Either that, or their subsequent trips to the boat should be at no charge.

Reasoning.......clogged fuel filters are easily diagnosed with vacuum and fuel pressure readings, besides that, diesel engines with clogged filters do not exhibit run problems at idle rpms if they still run up to cruise rpms. Full rpms or cruise rpms is where you usually first notice performance problems.

But, what do I know, those guys are the ones with computers and their names on their shirts.

I have at agree with Frank here. A low RPM issue is a control problem on an electronic diesel. Fuel flow issues arise at high RPM/load times first. Not low rpm/load.
If they shut down each injector without duplicating the problem. Then I'd have to start looking for a random loose ground, the crank sensor, or a bad electrical connection to the injector.

Update,
Issue still not resloved. No codes on the computer. took a 3 hr trip to conn. Boat ran like hell all the way up the river. ( hunting all over ) trip down the river plus another 12hrs she ran like a champ. Was in nasty blow on monday 4 -6's for 2 hrs... she purred right tru.... I dont get it...
