Going to do a lot of my winterizing this year and I'm Stumped in finding a local "cheap" supplier of Quicksilver Full Synthetic 20W-40 oil!!! It's what is required in the Maintenance Manual for my engines. Wally World, West Marine (doesn't show in their Catalogue), Sears.... Nada!! I don't want to pay shipping and really don't want to pay MM prices. Help would be appreciated, we live in central NJ!! And what oil filters are needed for the 350 mags it doesn't say in the Manual!!

If the boat is out of warranty use one of the major brand 15w-40 full syntetics. The 20w-40 is just a gimmick used by Mercruiser to overcharge for their oil. Some will disagree but that's my opinion.

My engines are way out of warranty. But really like the Quicksilver/Mercury 25W40 Synthetic Blend. I actually found the cheapest price was at West Marine. Free shipping made it even better. I use the Wix filters, have always been happy with their performance. My 350 MAG takes #51086.

Thanks guy's for the reply's. I know the boat is out of Warrantee I just want to use a good product that will work well in the Engines. I wonder what MM uses for out of Warrantee Boats?

our local westmarine has it on the shelf 25w40
and NAPA has it in most warehouses nationally

I like using the blend in case I ever get into a situation when I need to add oil (or lots of it). I carry a couple qts on board, but if I had some weird situation when I need to add more than that (ie: big leak, bad seal, etc) when I need to get home or something, adding a regular oil in a pinch, it can be mixed with the synthetic blend, where the full synthetic doesn't play well.

Marshall...
MM Brick sells it. Price isn't terrible. You won't be able to find 25w40 anywhere on earth but a marine store. I used to use Delo 400 15w40 on the old boat but am sticking with the 25w40 stuff for this boat. I agree it's likely a gimmick to get you to buy from them, but...whatever.

BTW, your thread title says 20w40. We are all assuming you meant 25w40 (?)

I use the synthetic blend - because that is what I started with. Synthetic came out after my first couple oil changes. I change the oil dramatically under the 100 hours - so don't expect an oil related issue.

I ordered marine synthetic from Amsoil which is where I get most all of the oil I use on our cars and boats (excluding diesel oil). I might have enough left over from our old boat to sell you btw - PM me if you're interested.

Ron that's what the Manual calls for 20W40 full Syn!

The synthetic-blend and regular dino oil are both 25-40. The full synthetic is 20-40. The only time that you HAVE to use the full synthetic is with a catalyzed engine... which I wouldn't think your 2008's would be? Other than that, you don't need to use the full synthetic or even any Mercury brand for warranty coverage (although you mentioned you're out of that, anyways). I'm not saying to use one over the other - just a common misconception that you have to use the best Merc stuff for warranty. But, do make sure you're at least using a good, FC-W rated oil.

As far as the pricing on the Merc stuff goes... well I don't really think it's anything like "price gouging" or even over charging. I think it just comes down to quantity sold. The more quantity that is sold, typically the lower the price - and there certainly isn't a large quantity of Merc oil being sold, especially when compared to the automotive side. Plus, Merc needs to make a profit and also the selling dealer so you have more "middleman" in the mix. In that case, it is what it is... but trust me, no one is getting rich from selling Merc oil.

I've been able to get all of the Quicksilver lube products at the local Walmart.

Henry

That is where I have been getting mine for the past few years also. This year I decided to check West Marines prices, they were actually cheaper than Walmart, at least by me. I was shocked.

Het Wet, just came back from Wally World and all the Quicksilver they had was 4 Gallons of 2 Cycle.... but they did have the Pink for $2.99/Gallon!

Dennis , Henry and Mitch thanks for the Input much appreciated!!

Our local Wally World didn't carry the synthetic blend either but I could order it and do a local pick up. I saved $40+ last year going that route.

Well maybe next year Bucit!! Found the Cool Fuel Filters w/O-rings on Defender Marine website. I ordered a Moeller Oil Pump and Brass Blow-out Fitting and got shipment in 2 Day's Wow!!!

Cool fuel filters... general practice is to replace them once a year. BUT... look at them - if they look good then I honestly don't see the need. The little one at the bottom can certainly be gently cleaned off - inspect it for any wear/damage. There's no way to really clean the big one. It all comes down to how much fuel has gone through and the condition of the fuel.
