I have started looking for a PWC. I am looking for something used. Items I do want are: 4-stroke, reverse and 3 seater. Any other items I need to be aware of? Are any brands better for dependability? Sea-doo seem to be really popular on our lake. I have noticed that many of the "rental" places use Yamaha's.

I used to have sea doo's until my back said enough....

Never had an issue ... I had 3 ... all GTX's ( 3 seat model )

The yamaha's never got my attention.. the biggest draw back was that rooster tail.... nothing more annoying then always getting wet....

UR out late... alittle nip in the air... ur dry but have a chill... that trade mark freaking stream of water will always finds its way to soak u....

IMHO

I have a Yamaha jet ski (4 stroke, 3 seater) and it's been a good machine. I don't mind the rooster tail because I never ride it.

I have a Sea Doo 20 foot jet boat and it's always breaking. I beat the crap out of it and abuse it on the water and it just can't take it. That big-boat wake thread?... In the jet boat you just hit the wake at 50 mph at 60 degrees, get air and fly over the remaining 2 waves, slam into the water, put it in full reverse and give it full throttle and submarine the nose and wash the passengers out the front of the boat. Mother-in-law hates me.

PS: I don't ever plan on selling this boat as it will probably sink someday

I've got a pair of Yamaha 3 seaters. Went with the Yamaha after talking with a Buddie of mine that has a PWC rental company. He said to stay with the Yamaha or the Hondas. As to the stream on of water on my models you can turn it off if you want. Personally I like them when the kids are running them. Makes them more visible to other boater

I just sold my Kawasaki Ultra 150. I never rode it as much as I thought I would. It was fine for an hour or so. But that was about all I would do. I put 15 hours a season on it. I had mine on a lift. I have had great luck with Kawasaki 2 stroke. I would get a 3 seater. It is hard on the old back as mentioned above. But the three seater provides a smoother ride.

I bought mine used with 5 hours on it and sold it 7 years later for $600 less than I paid for it. Mine was really well maintained and very clean and no scratches. So - if buy used at the right price and don't tear it up you can get some fun out of it and probably not lose much money. From the gentleman that bought mine - he said most of the used ones were very torn up. Even when they said low hours.

The very reason we went with the Waverunners was becasue of the rooster tails. Any extra visibility is a good idea to me. ( and its fun to get others wet with too  ) Just be sure when you are helping ummmm.... someone... off the beach they don't gun it while you have your face over the rear :smt013

Agree with getting a 4 stroke,3 seater too... easy to maintian, stable, easy to get on and nice ride. ( and if the rooster tail is getting you wet you arent going fast enuff  )

Our jet ski (err... waverunner) probably only gets 20 hours a year or so. My jet boat gets about the same.

Most boaters always make wisecracks when they see us on our jet-toys... but... they are fun. I can always say "my real boat is back at the dock".

I had one person tell me that jet skis and jet boats were like fat women and mopeds... fun to ride but you don't want to be seen with one.

My observation, back to the original post, is that Yamaha seems to be better quality than Sea Doo. My neighbor has a turbo Honda and that's a nice one also. I think it really is about the engine on these things. All they are is an engine with handlebars... and Sea Doo is not known for their engines but their hip marketing and brand. my 2 cents

I can only post from my own use... Like u, I beat the snots out of my ski.... I just didnt like the rooster...

I found an old picture of my first ski a Kawaski Tandom sport...

This is out jones inlet... U cant see but there are two of us on that ski... Thats my g/f wifes pony tail.... and yes it hurt...

I have two Yamaha's now and had one before. Of the group of ski folks the wife and I ride with we have about a variety of skis, 50 percent are Yamaha's the other Sea Doo owners sold theirs and bought the new Honda's and the other Sea Doo owners bought the new 4tec super charged ones and wish they had not. All the Yamaha owners still have theirs. Sort of says something don't it.

I believe I pulled at least everyone of the Sea Doo's back to shore at one time or another, either with my ski or the boat.

I don't have any pictures or footage of me and my Sea Doo jet boat. My wife hates that thing and says I'm going to die in it. For those of you that don't know what the submarine is in a 20 foot boat, I found these pictures on smugmug:

Do that with your sissy-boy sea ray sport boats...

Still don't know why these things just don't hold up well...

:smt017 I think I will pass...especially after reading the header...

My brave wife took this video as I reached a top speed of 50MPH before I reverse-gated the speedboat just a short distance from where she was filming.

Gary,
I got to find and scan my old pics... I got my stand up ski completely submerged... then shooting back out .....
