Wondering if the 4.5 Westerbeke can be removed without removing the engine on a 1999 340 DA. It looks as if removing the exaust may do it. Thanks

They pulled one out of my dock neighbors 330 without removing an engine.

have to pull off the starboard manifold, risor and elbow first, then you should be able to pull it with three guys... Take pictures of the connection and mark the wires before you disconnect the genny...

Thanks for the help, I'm gonna wait till we winterize then pull it. And 3 guys doesn't sound so bad the last Kohler we put in an older boat almost made 4 of us drop.

It weighs 320 pounds... I have to pull mine too... I put water in the cylinders (added a fresh water wash down connection) and started the genny... I think I have a bent or broken tie rod... I have couple of ideas how to pull it out... 1. Using a block and tackle attached to a home made hoist frame. 2. Borrowing a friends Jet Ski lift. 3. Using a four by four with rope and two or three friends... I plan on winterizing the engines then dissemble the starboard exhaust. I may also replace my exhaust risers, elbows and manifolds. I will definitely replace my raw water pumps after I pull the genny... Lots to do in the "off season".

Contact your local W'beke pros. It's Engines One in Hampton, VA.

There is a program that sells reconditioned gennies for about 1/2 of new. The newer are smaller and far more effecient than the older ones. It may be cheaper to go that way unless of course you are doing it all yourself. I don't have that talent. Wish I did.

$3600 for reconditioned genny

$7600 for a new 5 KW

$800 - $1200 if I do it myself...

I pulled mine from my 1999 330DA. Piece of cake. Remove the exhaust manifold, riser and elbow. Also remove the exhaust tube. Three guys to remove it. Two down in the engine room and one with a rope attached to the lifting eyes.

These engines are pretty easy to knock down, rebuild, and put back together. Not too many trick. Get the service manual from Westerbeke. It has information in it that you need. Rod has my copy.

I sent the block out to a machine shop to be cleaned, magna-fluxed and honed. One of the cylinders was marked up from the bad c-rod, so I had them bore and sleeve it. Tiny cylinders, make sure your shop can get sleeves if you go that route.

Here's mine still broken down for painting before reassembly. Westerbeke paints them totally assembled, but that doesn't do a good enough job.

Best regards,
Frank

Might sound like a dumb question bit I tried to pull plugs today and neither socket I had would work. What size are the plugs on a 4.5 Westerbeke. Thanks and if there is any magic involved let me know

It is tricky getting the plugs out.. It is the bigger spark plug socket.. It is a bit of a strange angle as you reach over the genny... I put the socket on with a flexible extenstion attached the the scoket wrench. Once you get the feel for it you will wonder why it took you so long on...

I finally pulled out my Generator... For anyone that has to do this on a 99-03 340, you don't have to take the manifold or riser off... Just the elbow and the exhaust tubes... I used a Jet Ski hoist, and it worked like a champ... Now all I need is for my westerbeake "mentor" friend, the great and mighty Frank C, to come buy with some sage advise of where to start... BTW my boat has a noticeable list to the port now...

Start by taking lots of pictures. You're going to have to put it back together and it's easier to look at the photo than to guess how to route the hoses and wiring harness.

Then the next thing is to remove the accessories and delicate stuff like the carburetor. Then the generator is removed from the engine. Once that's done, it's just a basic engine tear-down. Easy. I'll try to stop this weekend and show you how to remove the gen from the engine. There's only one minor trick.

Best regards,
Frank

Thanks Frank... It's because of guys like you that gives me the confidence to fix this my seff... I plan on start first thing Saturday morning...

I'm hoping to shrink wrap the boat. We'll see.

Hey Rod
If you want, I might be able to swing by to watch/lend a hand. Not that I know what I'm doing - but I have mad picture-taking skills!

I'll come by and drink a few beers and watch Ron take pictures !!!!

Rod and Nancy are going to have to go shopping at this rate.
