Potomac River Aquapalooza

What kind of sh!t show should we expect? We will be there around noon and want to make sure we can escape around 5. Ideas on how far out to anchor?

The last time I was at Aquapalooza (2 summers ago) we tried to anchor where we had a way to escape. Just don't go into the center. It's always crazy with people in the water.

We could potentially organize a raft up. I'm looking to head back to DC around 6p.

We also have a little prop shaft issue that may scuttle our plans. We're working to see if it will be an issue. We have a piece of line wrapped around our port shaft behind our prop. It's not impeding the prop, but we're having trouble removing it.

Who ended up going? My wife and I went late in the day (arrived around 3:30). We anchored downstream from the stage at a pretty good distance where we just barely hear the music. We swam in to shallow water and walked up to the restaurant for one drink and bought a t shirt, but spent most of the time on the boat. Saw lots of partying, and then a lot of people leaving around in the 7-8PM timeframe.

We went over to Potomac Creek and anchored for the night in a side creek. Had a generator issue due to anchoring in too shallow water, and it was pretty hot on the boat. So, we pulled anchor at 3 AM and I came home at hull speed (a 3 hour journey). If I were to do it over again, I would have either stayed anchored where I was originally, or in the main (deeper) part of Potomac Creek.

I didn't go. Friday we did a test run from our slip up to DC and back. Spending about 7 hours out in the heat, plus the noise from anchoring out along the National Airport landing pattern (I could read the serial numbers on the belly of the jets landing), completely wore us out. So we stayed home inside the air conditioning all day Saturday.

Wife and I with another couple left Colonial Beach at 1pm and arrived at the Aquapoloza around 2:20. We anchored directly out from the band on the outer edge. We flagged down a pontoon shuttle and headded in. Had some food an few buckets of Malibu (Really good) and bought some T-shirts. We headed back to Colonial Beach at 5pm. We had a good time but I guess I was expecting more. NOt having been to one before I had thought of it being a little different.

would like to have met some others there but maybe we can do a raft up for those that boat on the Patomac. If anyone is interested let me know and lets get something in the planning......

Bill,

Can't say I blame you with the heat. We stayed in the water enough to cool us off and had the genny running when we climbed back aboard to cool us off.

Belliswood, I think I saw your boat at some point, as I recognize the name. Either while we were swimming, or maybe when you were leaving I noticed the name.

I think there was more to it in years past, but the Town of Fairview Beach didn't like any of the land activities due to traffic problems, and so they scaled it down this year.

I'm up for setting up a raft up at some point.

We went to Swan's point and cleaned the barnacles off the outdrives. We swam around a little then headed in. Boy it was hot. Don't think we could have made a day of it at Fairview.

Saw Aero Nautical pulling in about the same time we did. Not sure if he went or not.

We were out there from ~1230 til 5 or so. Was expecting a little more people watchin ops (hi lite had to be the 5/6 young ladies in an almost swamped motorized 8' dingy) but we did stay on the outskirts on the ricks side. No way really to shoe horn in there. Lots of patrol in the area, that's for sure.

The 300 is definitely slower to plane when loaded down with beer for 6 thirsty adults all in the back of the boat.

Over all we had a good time that day, got there about 11am, tide up with our friends and partied pretty much all day minus a few mishaps (dragging anchors, almost lost a rear anchor, etc....)

Then about 11pm someone in a sedan bridge ~40 foot looked like maybe a blue hull and had blue underwater lights passed ~60 foot of us on plane throwing a 5-6 foot wake, crashing all our boats into each other.

Tried to get the cops or someone on the radio but no answer. Was rocking my boat 45 degrees back and forth, scuffed up the side, broke my bow line and a few other little things.

Was crazy. Wish we could have got someone to stop him.

We ended up spending the night and headed back north about 10am Sunday after breakfest.

So overall was a great time, except that sedan bridge.....

Glad to head folks had a good time.

We stayed at the dock Saturday to finish a fix on our port side prop and install some LED lights in the v-berth.

If anyone wants to organize a raft up in the DC area this season I'd be in. We are still planning one long weekend down to the bay, but my work/travel schedule has been so hectic we haven't put it on the calendar as of yet.

Mike,

Would live to set up a raft up or even an over ight at Colonial Beach. If anyone would like to do a raft up or over night meet and greet let me know and I can start getting things going.
