Plasma TV, what brand...

For you guys with Plasmas, mounted on the wall...have you noticed any discoloration of the paint around the TV?

Some owners manuals have a warning about potential discoloration from the heat and air flow around the set.

No on the paint discoloration but I can tell you my 50" plasma heats the 18' x 18' room considerably.

DIRECTV Remains Clear HD Leader With 130 HD channels on Tap For Mid-August
Good to know. The unanswered question is how much bandwidth. AVC-4 is much more efficient than MPEG2. Does it deliver the same image quality with half the bandwidth? Otherwise, they'll be using more bandwidth and bandwidth is expensive. Comcast and the other cable companies are trying to compress existing MPEG-2 HD signals so that they use less bandwidth.

Well, you can count me as one that does not fit into the "lots of people" category. An upconverted 480 SD DVD looks much better on a good flat screen than the same DVD played on a SD DVD player. Close to BD on the Toshiba XDE-500 upconverting player I have. Blue Ray will not go the way of HD discs. It's here to stay for some time, and I am glad it is.

Upconverted SD is still SD, not HD. Mathematics can not create detail that's not there, no matter how clever the algorithm. BD player sales are still slow. Time will tell if it takes off. I'd like to get one, but I'm waiting for one with all of the audio codecs to come to market first. Not seen a player with decoding for DTS-MA, for example.

Not exactly true. High Rez audio peaked much later with the introduction of DVD-A and SACD. Unfortunately for the music industry, they couldn't get their act together...

While video suffers many of the same problems, it has many things going for it. HD tv's are going into homes by the truck loads, Sony finally won a format war, HD content can't keep up with demand. Forcing everything to digital next year will get the late adopters onto the bandwagin.

Those higher audio formats all failed. Thus, audio peaked in '82 with the CD, IMHO. It has been downhill since because of bandwidth and sizing issues. Moreover, people are demanding the lesser quality formats. Bandwidth and size are driving the music format market.

I think the media companies are going to screw the pooch on this one too. The movie studios are much greedier than the record companies. BD was late because of copy protection. Currently, they mostly have some copy protection and down-resolution hooks disabled. If they become stupid enough to enable the full suite of copy protection and disable some consumers discs, it's the end of the game. Wait and see, I guess.

I do not see HD programming being widely demanded. I see quite a few HD sets in people's homes, but few HD players. The cable companies have been slow to provide substantial HD content. To be seen if the HD push by the satellite companies make a substantial splash in the market. Verizon with their fiber to the home is a wild card. They have the bandwidth. How will they use it?

Best regards,
Frank

I'm going to have to disagree with you... hahaha. In order to look at where the video market can go, you can look at the audio market for clues. People aren't demanding lower quality, what they are demanding is lower cost and convenience. There are many reasons why MP3's were the vehicle, demanding lower quality wasn't one of them. They were free and distributable. It's hard to sell high rez against free. What the film/video industry has to do, is learn from the audio industry. They have to get a handle on piracy, if they don't then they won't even be able to sell DVD's much less HD. They have to find a way to deliver high quality films for less. If you keep the quality high and charge as little as possible, finding alternatives aren't very appealing. The one BIG downside to Sony controlling the HD game is their licensing fees. Right now, if a small company wants to sell something in HD, they have to deal with Sony. Sony wants a $5k licensing fee to release your content on BR. That's a deal breaker for almost all but the big dogs. So they are going to look at other markets like iTunes etc... If that takes hold, BD can count their days or will be nothing more then a videophile neitch market.

I watch as much HD as I can get. Right now they make it VERY difficult to even find out what's on HD with cable. The channels are way up there, hard to find. Conveniece again at play. They reason most watch SD is they can't freakin find the HD. They don't wish for lower quality.

Well, you tell us, they said "later this year". There's two weeks left in the year, anything yet??

As I said in my earlier posts, my DirecTV boxes on the boat downloaded new software and a blurb came up on the screen and said I could now get their 1080p products...

But I have a KVH antenna... so I'm screwed..

Maybe someone who has the H21 boxes for home use will know how well it works.

I have two boxes: I H20 DVR and one H21 non -DVR. It's a very nice, quick box. I have it plugged into a standard tube TV right now though. When that thing dies I'll get another 42 Plasma.

I'm should have a replacement H20DVR on my porch today. The other one wouldn't record 2 shows.

Oh, another thing the stations could do is relax the HD standards they now have. Currently 99% of all the HD cameras out there don't qualify as broadcast HD. So that $7k HD camcorder you bought and captured that alien walking on your front lawn can't be broadcast as HD because it's a compressed HD format.

Some boats don't have a TV. I'm going to mention it to Obama so he puts it on his list of things to redistribute. You'll soon adjust to only having 2. Tell the kids to read books instead. This illustrates how redistribution really benefits society.

..take it to the holding tank.

Ok, ok, ok, this is a test.

The below is a link to a video.

Please view the video then come back and let us know if you passed or failed.

PS: I failed.

Don’t give it away! Let each person take the test themselves.

I failed too..............but I'm a professional :smt043:

But it gives me an opening to express my thoughts on this whole thread. I think most people overthink the whole plasma/lcd issue. Imo get the basic facts on each, don't get too wrapped up in the technical stuff too much then go to the store & buy what looks best to you and fits your budget.

Back on topic, I will say it is hard to recommend this kind of stuff. I have a 55" Panasonic plasma (720p) I've had for 4 years and it's got a great picture. However, I'm not real happy with the burn in I've got on the edges... I've also got a 5 year old 42" plasma in my office and it also has some burn issues...

Last year I bought a big Panasonic DLP 1080p TV (it's like 60 inches) and that thing has the BEST picture I've seen... put a Blu-Ray disc in and it almost looks 3D. It is also much thinner and lighter than I was expecting. If you have room, you really show look at the DLP sets... Less heat... no burn in... bright... lots of good stuff...

I've got LCD's on the boat, and some of you have seen or read my experiences with that, and I would just warn you on viewing angle issues... I have a Panasonic 29" LCD 720p TV on the boat and it has a great picture but it was like $1000... pretty expensive set...

I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p but it seems the 720p sets are so cheap now, I would probably get that if I was on a budge and looking for something 42" or less....

I stuck with Panasonic because I like having remotes the same. I HATE having 5 different manufacturers remotes... If I can't find the remote in my office, I go steal the one out of the kid's playroom... but that's a minor point I guess.

OK, we plan to bite the bullet after Christmas and have decided to go with a Plasma TV but am still looking at different brand names. So, I would like some input. We decided on the Plasma verses the LCD due to possible placement in our family room and the angles we would watch it from. Plasma gives us a few more degrees of angle to work with. Weight is not an issue. I can either hang it above the fireplace or on a TV stand the 150# 37 inch TV currently sits.

So, what brand? We are thinking of 50 to 52+ inch size wise...
Pioneer I have the 50 inch .We wall mounted TV color is fantastic.Email me private if you want a wall mount or HMDI cables at cost My company sell them:thumbsup:
