I am in the process of cleaning up my outdrives to repaint them.
I am overwhelmed by the different recommendations on how to go about the process.
I started out thinking I would go to bare aluminum as they have been neglected and thought it would be wise to start fresh.
I used a small da with an aluminum oxide disc to get a lot of the drive to bare metal, some hard to sand areas still show some green primer or black paint.
My question is what should I prime with since some areas are not to bare metal.
All input is GREATLY appreciated!

When I repainted mine a few years ago, I had sanded etc and probably still had 70% paint. Even so I primed with Zinc Chromate primer and then finished with 3 coats of finish. I assume you are going the rattle can route? I have since recoated my lower with Mercury Phantom black, but if you don't have the Merc paint or don't want to buy it, Rustoleum Gloss Black held up very well for me and is a very close match to Phantom Black.

Years ago when I had my stern drive, I used this primer. I would search for something like this. Not sure if this brand still makes or if even available but it did the trick for me back in the day.

So no issues applying the primer over both the bare metal and paint?

No - no issues. I did one coat of primer and three coats of the finish. No peeling or any problems like that - just some light touch up on the skeg and prop since.

I have tried all the shaker can drive paints and still have to scrub and scrape the barnacles every few trips. Last year i used this stuff and was amazingbhow great it worked. You just brush it on

Buy a quart of Trilux, plus a few throw away bristle brushes. Glop it on, everywhere. More is best. It looks ugly as hell, but will prevent corrosion. Done right this should be applied to an epoxy primer coat, like Pettit 4700. Although more commonly used as a barrier coat on fiberglass hulls, epoxy is an excellent primer for underwater metal.

I ordered zinc chromate primer and a quart of the trilux af outdrive paint.
Hoping for the best.
