After seeing the Fart Filter Rebuild, I started thinking about other odours. Activated charcoal is used in cars for fuel systems so...:smt024

Could this Charcoal Filter also be used in the fuel tank vent line to reduce fuel odours? When the engine room gets up to temps the fuel tanks are also slowly heated. The resulting air expansion within the tanks vents overboard via the fuel tank vent which is fine while underway, but can often be detected while anchored.

Nothing like that gassy smell while having lunch!:smt009

Will it work?? Any obvious problems??:wow::huh::smt101

I think it would trap and hold volatile substances. Comparitively, farts are fairly vacuous. Gas fumes would probably saturate the charcoal very rapidly.

Now, if you could hook one up to that avatar baby, then you'd be doing something.

Trying to get him to quit, but you know how kid's never listen!

I don't think that I would be "farting around" with this mod. Better to have a gassy smelling lunch than no lunch at all, eh? :smt119

Charcoal filters bond only with certain chemicals. The Problem is it is especially good at trapping other Carbon based chemicals I.E. Carbon Dioxide.

This bonding process will happen quickly and render the filter useless quickly.

Another problem I see is with Particulate accumulation. Once this happens it will allow less fumes out and hold more in.

My advice is to not toy around with this on your own, look for a solution already in place if it exist.

If you do play around (And even if you don’t), please be careful and if you do not already have a CO2 alarm—please get one installed ASAP.

As an ex auto engineer i can state that this has been used in autos for years but the charcoal needs to be purged on a regular basis. As stated above, the charcoal will get saturated quickly and become ineffective.

"that this has been used in autos for years "

Absolutely, but autos have natural ventilation all around them. Boats have to force ventilation and fumes have a limited way out. Not restricting egress is the challange.

I've never had a CO2 alarm/monitor on any boat, gas or diesel, I have owned. Why would you want something that monitors CO2? Afraid of "global warming" or something?

Well the unwashed second cousin I own :smt001 doesn't have a filter and I never saw it discussed before.
But I sure need one. I will have one next season for sure.
Thanks for the info.

LOL, not afraid of Global Warming--That is in control of the SUN.

Just worried about the kids, I have read too many times of CO2 deaths although, cannot remember ever ready about that on a boat.

My boat has a CO2 alarm. A couple of the other boats that I have looked at before buying this one did as well.

I have never heard of anyone dying from CO2... It's not poisonous (unless you are trapped in a sealed spaceship). Come to think of it... I've never even seen a CO2 monitor that you can buy.

I think you missed his point CO2 is Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxides is CO… that’s the one you should be afraid of.

(Sorry you got there ahead of me.)

He didn't say CO... He said CO2. You know... the global warming/cap and trade/carbon credit stuff. The primary gas in beer... The primary gas in soda... The primary gas in a fart... I know this guy is a left wing liberal and he wants boats outfitted with carbon dioxide monitors so the government can regulate them.

Drives me nuts too Gary....CO dammit!

Ah… I missed that one. A fart detector, that’s not a bad idea. The Admiral says she “does not fart”, I could use one of those and catch her!

CO death on boat. Yes it does happen. In fact last year a fella died on Lake Lanier from CO poisoning. Here is an excerpt from the news. "Investigators said the man had taken his boat to the service dock Tuesday night and spent the night on board with the generator running. Fumes from the generator appear to have filled the cabin and caused the victim’s death, Strickland said." Everyone please install a CO detector on your boat if you spend any time closed up in the cabin.

Not left wing, not in favor of Cap and Tax...I am insulted but deserved it.

My bad on the CO2 confusion. My thoughts were of restricting ventilation only. Just adding the 2 at the end of CO and see what i get for such a little mistake. You guys will keep me on my toes I can see.

I never been so embarrassed and I will try not to do that again. Again, I was concerned with restricting ventilation ONLY.

Sorry

Maybe this could be used as a cheaper alternative.

> New Seniors Deodorant
60 plus deodorant...
I got this new deodorant today. The instructions read "remove cap and push up bottom ".

I can barely walk, but whenever I fart, the room smells awesome!
