I was getting ready to install a new gasket and O'ring kit on my MR alpha outdrive and was wonder if you should use sealer on the big gimble oring? When I pulled the lower unit I noticed that the old one is sealed in the housing with what looks like brown permatex. Thanks

The sealer is only on the housing side, so no sealer was on the lower unit side. I think the outdrive has been off and on a few times without disturbing the big squared off oring down in the housing.

The reason some people use sealer or grease is to stick it in place.
There is not much of a groove that it sits in. It can fall/slip out of place during assembly and you wont know it until you see it leaking when your all done.
I have used a good sticky grease for this job. Worked well and easy to clean out next time.
Be sure to carefully clean all the old out before putting in the new.
Cheers,
Mark.

Spline grease for o-rings on input shaft

Bellows adheasive for ujoint bellows ring and water intake ring. Thats the "brown permatex" your seeing.

I always put a coat of spray lithium over everything before reinstalling the outdrive. Helps hold the base gasket and water intake o-ring in place if you happen to hit it accidentally.

Thank you very much. CSR is a great add to my tool box. I feel very lucky to get professional help for free. Thanks again.
