Last night we launched at Swimomish, (with a little north breeze, not too bad though) around 5PM. We made it to Snug a little bit after 6, tied up then called Shane, the new owner of our old boat, "Nehalennia II", that we were meeting here. he said he's just out side of Snug on Haro straight and they're watching the whales. I told Mo, cut 'em loose let's go.

So glad we did. We ran into the "Super Pod" when all "J", "K" and "L" pods join together for their 4th of July potluck.

We learned later that there are about 85 whales when this happens. It was amazing, Orca everywhere.
I'll post some more pics when they are done uploading(I have a slow connection where I am)

my old boat "Nehalennia II" is in this one. See how tall the dorsal fin is in relation to the height of the boat. This boy was "BIG"

I always wondered... do they ever have an "encounter" with the hull of a boat?
I've had one go under us. They know what they're doing. It's a humbling feeling.
They are huge.

Wow...that's awesome !!! BTW..what's the water temp there now ?
water temp right now 54.

Here's some more. They took forever to upload

Truly awesome pics, Todd. For all the years we've been cruising in the San Juans, we've only seen one of the small pods once (off Jones). So, thanks!
Always such great photos from you.

Let me know when you're heading up that way, it'd be good to meet you on the water.

Wow Todd, Very nice pics! I'd love to see those in real life!

What an awesome area you live in!

Kinda makes the dolphin in SouthEast Georgia look like minnows. That really makes you appreciate all that you see on the water. Great pics.

I'm going to start a thread here soon for a 2010 CSR Rendezvous for next summer. Come on out.

Yeah they are really big. It's hard to decscribe the size from what you may have seen at SeaWorld, etc. The big males have a 6-8' dorsal fin. This experience we caught at the right time. The "Superpod" when all J, K and L pods get together twice a year.

Wow, awesome pics. My spotting of a pair of dolphins in the Potomac River this past rainy Sunday afternoon just doesn't compare...!

Thanks
