Have a Onan generator in my 500 Sundancer that shuts down after running about 20-25 minutes.. Any suggestions? Have replaced the fuel filter, impellor, and all fluids look okay

What error code are you getting? I had a repetitive code 61 trip and it turned out to be a crushed feed line from the fuel tank to the Racor. Check your fuel lines to and from the filter. If you've got it, what does the vaccum guage read on you Racor?

Check your impeller. If it is not pumping enough water through the system, a temperature sensor will open up and shut down your genny. After it cools down, you will be able to restart it again. I had to change my impeller this summer. You can get it at a Cummins dealer.

You might have restriction at the water intake under the hull like I did. Take the cover off the sea strainer (generator off) and see how the water flows in. It ought to come in gangbusters. Mine had mussels, clams, etc. restricting the inlet. My diver didn't see or feel anything due to the inlet screen but I took the hose off the seacock and stuck a 1/2 inch ratchet handle down through it. It all broke loose and the water flow increased 3 fold. Just a note, I had an impeller so shot that it only had one blade left complete and the rest were down to almost nothing... the gen still ran so I would check the flow first. Good luck, JetLag

If all the above mentioned checks out - check to see how much fuel is in tank. Many times it will shut down as a safety precauttion when the fuel drops below 1/4 of tank so you do not run out of fuel on main engines. Good luck.

I have two questions first.

1. Is this occurring while the boat is under way or at anchor or both?
2. Do you have control valves that allow you to pull and return the fuel from either your port or starboard tanks?

I ran across the same problem you are having this summer.

Trying to research a problem I am having with my gen & ran across this tread.
Mine will run just fine one day then die two or three times the next.
It always re-starts right away.
Impellers & water flow are good.

Morgan Jane to answer your questions.
1. only dies while underway (does stumble once in a while at anchor but never dies)
2. I have a single control valve to select the tank I am using.

Any ideas?
