I hope this is the right place for these questions. I have a an Onan 6.5 KW generator on the boat. When I bought it 4 years ago, the surveyor tested the gen and it was fine. When the boat was shipped to my marina, I winterized the genset, changed the oil, and fogged the genset. Well now I have the major repair items out of the way and started to work on the genset. IT would be nice, but not needed to have a working genset for me. I just like getting things to work right.

  1. I went today to pull the impeller out and of course there is always that one screw that is a PIA. I pulled 3 out of the 4 screws without any problems. This is more of a reach issue than the screw frozen. Is it better to take the fly wheel cover off, then undo the pulley to get the cap off the impeller? I left it all attached and tried that way.
  2. At first I could not find the spark plugs but then realized that there is a different boot to the plug from the standard rubber boot. It seems that the wires go through what seems to be a metal cover over the wire and the spark plug. Is there a special way to remove the plug?

Thanks for your help.

If memory serves me correctly, the end shielded cable unscrews at the plug then pulls off. Then you can remove the plug with a socket. I bought the plugs at my auto supply house for around $16.00 each.
