Hello to all new and old members!

After moving to the USA a year ago, I finally took some courage and bought a 2008 Sea Ray 260 Sundancer... the only detail is that I did it via eBay. Am I nuts? Probably... I didn´t even check the boat, just bought it an hour ago, so looking forward to go inspect my new baby at Toms River, NJ. Any recommendations here?

Is it common to buy that stuff online, or am I the first schmuck to do so? I´m counting on eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection in case of transaction fraud, title problem, liens, and undisclosed engine, body, transmission, and/or frame damage at the time of purchase that will cost more than $1,000 to repair.

So assuming all goes well this week with inspection and paperwork, insurance, what do I do next? I´m a CT resident, so I guess I have to transfer to my name and register at the CT DMV? Any ideas about marina space? I heard that Darien´s public marina has a 3 year waiting list :(

Any words from the wise will be well received.... thanks in advance!

Anyways, pleasure to be part of this community, and looking forward to take my wife and kids to go for a ride in the Long Island Sound before this summer is over.

    Regards,

    Pontevedra

Welcome to CSR. As for any suggestion, you will need to see and sea trial the boat to make sure it is what you expected. Don't know of to many that would by a big ticket item without actually seeing it first. Your faith must be stronger than mine.
When I bought Old Skool we Lake tested it for 2 day's because we were bringing it from Wi to NC.

You'll most likely blow through $1000.00 just getting it ready if there are no major issues.

Did you get any extras like instrumentation, life vests, optional equipment, swim platform that usualy come with a used boat?

Welcome aboard! I don't think you're crazy as long as it passes the sea trial.

I manage a marina in Stamford if you need a slip.
We have room. The rest of this year would be around $1200.
It has the nicest docks around here.
With very quick access to the Sound.
    Good Luck,
    Mark.

It was a good deal, apparently. The gentleman selling was a super nice Chiropractic Doctor who's trading up for a 330 Sundance. The eBay deal is going 100% smooth, no fraud, no misleading, nothing. Very lucky I guess.

I got a quote for a brand new 2010 Sundancer 260 with all possible discounts at $64k (that deal ended July 31st), so now best is around $70k. Considering the price I paid, guess I dodged a 33% depreciation for a 2008 model. So all in all, a fair deal in this current economy. Both sides are happy with it.

Now it's time to check that baby and see whether it delivers all that it promises! :smt001

I'll keep you abreast of how that goes.

    Cheers,
    PonteVedra

I personally never owned a boat, but for as far as my memory goes my family always had boats. We've started with a small Scarab 19" (i think), moved into a mid-size Sea Ray, then we made a big leap and bought a run down Ferretti 330 which we refurbished from scratch and looked wonderful. Now more recently, as the economy picked up in Brazil, they traded for a pre-owned SunSeeker Portofino 48", as some European owners were in distress.

Anyway, now it's mine, and my first cruiser... Not a match for a Sunseeker, but still a reliable Sundancer with 55 hours only.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely join the power squadron!

    Regards

I can't make 2pm, but you may want to PM RONDDS who keeps his boat tha LPM, and ask him for the name of a mechanic at the marina who is trust worthy... You can ask the machanic to take a look at the boat, and he may know som the history... Ron (RONDDS) is the one the best people I know, and he could be of great assistance...

I contaced RONDDS and he told the mechanic's name at LPM is John... Make sure you take the boat for a nice long ride, should be a beatiful day tomorrow... BTW, the boat will have brown stains on the sides from the cedar water... It will come off with Mary Kate On-Off when you pull the boat to move it up to CT... If you plan on driving the boat up to CT, I would recommend you bring someone who is familar iwith the trip...

Many thanks! I left Rondds a PM as well. Should I tow it back or just ride it back some 100 miles back to Stamford, CT?

Just emailed you back. A word of caution - you may already know this but since you are new to the USofA, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CLEAR TITLE ON THIS BOAT. If the owner has a loan on the boat and there is a lien holder on the title, you will not be able to transfer the ownership without a letter from the lender that the loan is satisfied. That goes for any state in this country. Look at the title and at the bottom there's a spot for lienholder. If there's a bank or individual, you need to go with this guy to the bank and make sure he pays off the boat before you take posession.

If you already know this, I don't mean to insult you but this is very important to clear up and there are a lot of crooks out there. Caveat Emptor Baby!

Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow - there's no place I'd rather be than at the boat on a beautiful day in Agosto, but I cannot be there. I wish you luck!

BTW, just looked at the ebay ad. The boat is on my dock. Never noticed it.
