Official "My Doodness" Restoration Thread

Wow, yeh, the laminate parts ARE pretty far gone. Sorry, didn't see 'em in your first post. Thought you were referring to the teak rails. The PO of one of our previous boats made a similar repair by relaminating the pieces with a cheap veneer and THEN painting them. It was a good fix but didn't look nearly as nice as if he had done the repair with teak veneer. If you can find a source for sheets of teak, mahogany or oak veneer you could try a few of the panels yourself, maybe starting with the cabin entry area. That way you'll be able to determine if the rest of them will be worth the effort. If you don't have any commercial hardwood suppliers in you area try some of the custom furniture shops. All the defective parts will have to be repaired or replaced sooner or later anyway. The underlying wood may be in good enough condition to reuse as was the case with our previous boat. A couple of our local boat builders have access to teak and other exotic woods and they don't mind selling bits and pieces to us "do it yourself" types. I guess another option would be to find someone parting out a similar boat. That's where Captain_Ron is so lucky. He's near a boat graveyard that covers acres of land. Would be nice if there was something like that near you. Good luck.

+1 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I use boiled linseed oil on my teak, and it produces a gorgeous deep golden honey color. I tried sanding and varnishing the first time, and the varnish flaked off after one year. Re-sanded and oiled...haven't looked back. Oiling is the way to go!

You didn't give the varnish grounds to hold onto. BKdude, Love the project best of luck...

You arent too far from checker marine in lasalle mi. try them for pieces of trim and slides for the companionway door, mabey taylormade products has the plastic slide inserts. Also i know there is a old boat at bay harbor marina in baycity being cut up and may be a good source for teak or mahogany ,but hurry its going fast. There is a guy near gladwin i think that sells teal also.I cant think of his name he used to adv on craiglist.

I buy my teak at Northwest lumber co. In Indy.
pricey but top quality stuff.
As for the veneer... just sand through it and teak oil it. Not perfect but looks good when done.
You might try a cabinet refacing service to replace the veneer also.

so what you are telling me is all this wood (not just the trim) is teak?

I'm worried about sanding this stuff because I don't want to discover it's a thin teak laminate and I sanded right through the entire layer of teak (because it's so rotten)

As you can clearly see. it's ALL in bad condition but hey I knew what I was getting into. I'm just excited at what it will look like when I finish it.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! Congrats on the first trip out. I know the feeling I worked all last year on my '78 24' SRV Cruiser. I finally made it out the middle of last year testing and tuning the rest of the year. I did the same thing with my boat. I took all the varnish off and just teak oil the trim on the topside. I made new engine and battery hatches and CETOL them. I've read alot of posts and this method has never came up. Look up "sikkens Cetol Marine Gloss" It's awesome and pretty simple to apply. I need to take some pics and post them. Pretty proud of my topside now. You mentioned your seat, I have the same one and it's crumbling around me. I have decided to take it out and use one of the Cooler type seats that have the backrest that flips back and forth. My buddy has one in his center console bay boat and it's awesome. NO WOOD. As we all know with our old boats, don't we have enough? Ha. It's always good to see there's others out there going through the same old trials just to get that wind in your hair. Good luck!

I've been scouring the internet with no luck about what these things are called or where to find them. Can anyone out here in the CSR world help me out?

What I'm trying to find is the plastic pieces that go into the track where the arrow is above. Does anyone know what these things are called or where I could buy new ones? the old ones have split and broken inside the tracks. Thanks

My hatch is the same... These are just bimini top slides screwed into the bottom. You want Taylor #5854. Mine was flopping all over the place and because a general pain in the butt. I pulled the hatch, and it looked like a lot of repairs were made over the years. The plywood was strewn with old holes and is kinda dried out.

Because I didn't have time to pull it all apart and rebuild it, I sanded it, filled it in with some "plastic wood" type stuff, and put new slides on. I sanded then painted it and it looks great. The trim strips on the outside are teak, but mine was shot so I just repaired it and painted it (same color as the helm, maroon). It looks and functions like new.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pics to show you, but I'm sure you get the idea. I guess with all the work I've done on mine I should have some pics to share!

Those panels.are a veneer plywood Sea Ray called Decraguard back in the day. They were never real teak more like the 'picture's of wood grain like on particle board furniture. If you sand it the grain will go away fast. Best way to fix if the underlying plywood is bad is to use a good quality furniture grade plywood veneer and coat it with Cetol.

Mine are plywood, so I guess somebody changed it out beforehand. I have Decraguard on my engine hatch, which is about ready to be used as firewood. I contacted Olympic Panel directly to see if I could buy a piece. That ain't happenin' any time soon. On my hatch, the top got ratty from water, spilled beer, etc. I sanded it lightly, and actually painted it the same color as my helm. Turned out nice. Yeah, I know, post pics. I'll get some - some day!

...And I just saw the old ones I replaced laying on my bench this morning and said, gee, I wonder if that guy with the sea ray was able to find these... They were kind of a pain to replace, because you have to use some pretty small screws. And you have to have them straight, and absolutely parallel with each other, or you'll be doing like I do: Wanting to rip the entire hatch off the boat and throw it in the water!

And for that 245 in CT, I'd LOVE to take my trailer up there and drag that boat back, but I just don't need that much off of it to make the trip. Hope you can do better!

Well, I finially finished up the bow pulpit. I have made a lot of progress on the boat but I still need to update the thread but here's a preview of the work I've done. More to come!!!
