Official Cummins QSC-500 Thread

It is so easy to remove and inspect the inside of the tube, I would not try welding in place. I would only weld it if it was determined to be just and inclusion in the metal and not from corrosion. Its probably not a cheap piece of pipe but replacement would be the best and safest option. I would only use the tape to get me back home.

Thanks CD.
I agree new pipe is best/safest. Waiting to hear how much a new pipe will be, couldn't find it on the cummins parts site.

FWIW, this is the tape I used and it worked wonders!

New to the Cummins engines this year and have had no issues this summer with the engines firing right up without hesitation. I took to my marina last month for winterization where it has sat waiting for them to change the oil and winterize the blocks. Today, after about a month of sitting I get a call from the marina saying the engines crank but won't start. It has been a little cold in the evenings at night, but nothing prolonged or too much below freezing and the water temperature is still warm with the heat on in the boat. Any thoughts on why the diesels wouldn't fire? How cold does it have to be to affect the fuel mobility?
Thanks for any thoughts
Rob

Check that the low idle switch is not on. Bump the rpm up an extra 100 to help. Your fuel might not have enough additives to combust at cold Temps. Be sure to add at every fill up if not offered at the pump.

I use this during every fill up. Less smoke and stronger start up. If you have never done this, you will see a huge difference in performance.

Turns out it was the fire suppression system sending a false discharge signal and shutting everything down. Put the switch to override on the panel and the engines fired immediately. Now I have to figure out how to reset the generator which is throwing an error 61 for external shutdown due to the fire suppression. Putting in override did not fix this issue.

What are the odds? What would cause this to happen?

Did you check the connections at the Halon bottle? Is it full?

Connections were fine and the gauge is still in the green on the halon bottle. Only thing I could think was a pressure drop due to winter, or possibly, I have a faulty circuit somewhere.

Interesting... I have no idea all the sensors on this system but curious to learn more.

Hi gang,

Currently shopping 480DAs, 2006 to 2009.

I've read through all the threads here. Is there a dedicated list of items I should ask about service wise on these QSC 8.3 engines?

One I'm currently looking at says the exhaust was completely serviced 4 years ago.

What are some basic items I should ask about these engines before the offer is made?

Thanks

Annually, hour Mark? What is a common interval.

I asked about the aftercoolers. I was told the exhaust was gone through 4 years ago.

Engines are currently at 1500 hr.

Thanks

The after-coolers are part of the raw water cooling side. Cummins recommends servicing them every 3 years. Make sure you have a Cummins tech on board for when you survey this or any other Cummins powered boat you look at. They are great engines and it is money well spent.

I would want to know that the service was done every three to at least five years on the fresh water cooling side especially if a salt water boat. Mine were twelve years old with less than five hundred hours on them when I finally pulled them for service. I had a tough time pushing the cores out and had some corrosion on the castings. Cores looked brand new still. I repaired the corrosion since it was not in the sealing area. Some good advice that I was given but did not feel was warranted in my case was replacing the oil and fuel heat exchangers since when they fail they fail with little warning and take out the drives. With 1500 hrs I would probably want to think about changing them if they are still original.

Have you logged into

Put in your engine serial number and the part number should be there

Wanted to post this fuel line update here as I experienced first hand on my 540 where the weld cracked and left me spraying diesel all over the engine. The update involves a new bracket that supports the pipe with a rubber mount on the pipe now to dampen the vibration.

Need to do an oil change... what oil is best for these motors? I always used shell rotella in my cats, what do these like?

This is what cummins put in the past 2 oil changes
