Official 400EC thread

Just found this thread. Never knew it was here. I only saw the thread where we are combined with the 410s and DAs.

Mark,
TV installation looks great! I have been thinking of doing the same thing. I like the idea of the hinges and plywood. Simple, yet functional. I have a 6yo who is glued to the TV while we are underway, we have Sat TV and his Wii.
I am curious about the wire runs, did you just drill holes into the upper cabinet and run the wires along the back? Also, did you use screws or bolts into the wall? What size and length did you use? I am always worried about going too far and punching through or not going far enough to hold whatever I am mounting.

I posted this on another thread, but thought other 400EC owners may want to see the cockpit TV I added.

i have no idea why the pictures are upside down, sorry.

here is a link to a short write up I did on another thread (pictures were also upside down in that thread too):

Some things are more specific to the 400EC so this thread works better.

The screws are the standard size that came with the hinges and there are 8 per hinge so, it's pretty secure.
I predrilled the holes being very careful not to go through to the bathroom.
That wall is fiberglass and wood construction so it's got good bite for screws without having to through bolt the mount.
The wood I used for the mount is the piece that's under the old TV.
The wires are routed via 1-1/2 inch holes drilled up near the light and through the cabinet, dressed up with black grommets used for routing wires (from Home Depot).

Thinking about adding a gas strut to hold it in the out position and a catch to hold it against the wall.
I was worried that it might sag being held this way but, don't think it's going to be a problem. The TV's weight is nothing...

Just an FYI re: watching TV via wifi on your boat. Marinas usually run off of a single 15-20 mps service. All it takes is 2-4 devices running streaming video on a single system to cause it to slow down or shut down completely. So if your streaming video stops working it may not be the marina's fault there may be too many users on the system.

That'll put a damper on things..I'll give it a try and see..

Looks great Mark. Thanks for the info. Did you decide on the gas strut and latch idea? Also, I noticed your ship/shore cable switch is mounted in that cabinet, was that your doing or factory? Mine is behind the TV. I never use it anyway (have Sat TV) and the coax was used to feed the Sat signal to the salon's receiver anyway. I like the location in the cabinet. Easily access able but out of the way.

Harold,

I really wanted the cables hidden but, this was easy.

No decision yet on the gas strut/latch yet.
Been away at work and haven't tried anything yet.

As far as I know the Ship/Shore location was from the factory.

I like your deck TV install...I may do the same some day..

Finally got my shore power plugs replaced...what a job...which ever of you guys that did it by himself you must be "stretch armstrong".
Thanks to all on thread for ideas.
Next project is my air horns and anchor.

Any tips or was it straight forward?
I need to replace mine because they're a little burned looking.
They work OK so, I keep putting it off.

Straight forward just have to feel for the nuts on bolts as can only actually see but a couple...instead of using the bolts & nuts I used screws a little larger than bolts to reinstall

If yours are just a little burned I would clean with a small brass brush & an Emory board...mine had gotten brittle, cracked, & wobbling around.....turning off ALL power from dock & on boat before connecting helps with the burning or so I have been told

Walking through WMarine, I saw a Hatch Adjuster and thought it might work for the TV angle adjuster I'm looking for.

Still might add a small catch but, don't really need it.
Works nicely locking to any angle and still go's flat against the wall.

Now add summer weather up north here and were ready!

Looks real good Mark. Thanks for taking the close up shots, now I can see the hinges and panel you used. I like it and may borrow your idea!!

I like the way it came out and was the simplest (and cheapest) way to get the TV tight against the wall while being able to swing out to the perfect viewing angle.

Would be even better with one of those ultra slim TVs...
This 29" LED was a Black Friday deal my kids got for me :)

That's a nice install...better option than I took. I am looking for a copy of the rolling door that would, either match or come close to existing ones, to cover the space previously occupied by the old TV.

Hey everyone,
Great Thread! Looking at 400 EC's right now, on Lake St. Clair. The gassers sure seem to be hungry. Anyone had any luck with the Cat 3116's? I know there were problems with them, but Cat fixed them (if the owners took care of them). Any advise is helpful, thanks!

Oh, and if anyone knows of a nice freshwater 400 for sale in the area, let me know.

Thanks!
Pat

You can find plenty of info about the 3116/3126 Cats if you search around CSR.
Many of our members swear by them..

There's a Cat-powered example in Catawba, and a gasser at the DYC.

400EC's were also available with Cummins B-Series. One was near me at MacRay for a few years. The stern was always full of soot and he said it ran no faster than a gasser, but that's generally a highly-regarded engine.

I removed the TV. It is place had a drawer made with a catch to hold it in during rough seas. The drawer is now my pull out bar. I then covered the space with a cabinet door made by a carpenter to look just like the rest of of the doors. Laminate was not difficult to match. I am really happy how it looks and now functions.
