Official 390 E.C. Thread

I was thinking I would fill the old holes with West System, then caulk at the attachment screws and around the edges. I am installing a new Good F850C rope/chain windlass which replaces the original Good 500 rope. Once I started taking things apart it made sense to do everything..........thanks again for the info!

I saw your photos while following your thread, I am sure not looking to find that kind of a problem.

One of those "might as well" moments since it was in the yard and had not been painted. It is now solid glass and epoxy and I will never have to worry about it again. Always keep in mind that fresh water and plywood core are not good company. If you drill that big hole for the chain hawsepipe and your plywood core is the least bit wet - you got a problem that needs to be addressed because that windlass has a really big load on it when that hook won't give way your deck probably will!

Need help again. It appears that the engines in my 390 are bastards. None of the parts catalogs displayed on the web show pictures of my engines. (7.4 Bluewater with volvo trans and straight drive) Anyone else have this configuration and if so where can I find a correct parts manual. I am tired of making multiple trips to the boat only to find out I have the wrong part. When I look up the engines by serial number I get two different variables. One with Hurth and one with borg warner. Neither of these engines has the same cooling system as mine. I have come across some things that need replaced and am going crazy trying to find them. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Hi team,

Looking to change my oil/filters today after work. Didn't think to look at my oil/fuel filters to see what the part numbers were. Does anybody have this information handy? It would be great to be able to pick this up on the way out there, as there are no part's stores nearby. The link from sea-rays faq's on service manuals didn't work, and I can't seem to find it from merc's website.

Engine's are 1989, 454's. This will be my first time servicing these myself. Oil filter's look pretty accessible - have not looked at the fuel filters yet. Changed out the transmission fluid last week. Other than keeping plenty of rags handy, and getting the engine up to temp before I pump the oil out, are there any other tips?

Should be Fram PH-5 or equivalent, not going to start the best oil or filter debate. ;)

On the 390 in 1990 the bow pulpit is already fiberglass with teak strips on top of it. Looks good when brand new then a lot of problem to keep teak looking good with all the small strips. I do like the plastic insert to replace the strips I am going to order one.

Fuel filters on mine are the black body/orange top Fram units that have a cartridge in them The replacement cartridge is a Fram FBM110-PLM. Good luck changing them, I have been working on mine for a couple of months and still haven't got them them apart.

Got the oil change done. My mechanic was going to charge me $500 dollars to change both engines/genny. Figured I'd do it myself. I put Fram oil filters back on, with 15w 40 heavy duty oil. My marina mechanic warned that regular oil filters may not withstand pressures associated with high RPM boat motors. From reading forums, it seems I will be okay. Also 85 percent of my cruising is at cocktail speed of 1500 RPMs. New fuels filters on too. Everything seems to be running well so far this spring (knock on wood) Thinking of doing the trim tab upgrades next, think that would be a good investment as my cruising speed around 3300 rpms is 17 mph currently, feels like it's never on plane.

We removed our sliding cockpit door today and found some broken rollers. I seem to recall from a previous post that these parts were available at Home Hardware of all places. Does anyone have their part numbers. There are also 2 bearings that seem to be ok, but there is no time like the present to replace them while it is all apart. I also recall somebody mentioning some kind of tape in the top track, but there was none on mine. What would that be for anyways?

Being in salt water - my bearings got a little rusty. I machined a new wheel out of Delrin and pressed in a sealed stainless steel bearing.

If you want a home center replacement just bring your old wheel and match it up. None of the home center wheels will be plastic. They are all steel.

Hey Folks!

I’ve been lurking on this forum for the past year learning about boats and especially the 390 Express Cruisers. Thanks to all of you for your detailed comments and “how-to” exercises, I’ve been able to be comfortable on my boat and even take care of a few service issues. While I may not be the most mechanically inclined captain out there, I’ve got a good understanding of all those components underneath me and the way that they’re integrated, thanks to your detailed pictures and explanations. Now that I’ve finally joined the Club, maybe one day I’ll find I have something to add to the conversation.

Thanks for sharing!

Chris

Pietro Tab 001.jpgWell, I finally got it made!! If all goes well, I will have it installed this w/e and I will send pics. I was initially inspired by Pietro's tab, but I made it to Doug's specs from 390x ... thanx Doug ... I will let you know how it works out. I had it anodized as well. Is that big enough? Can everybody see it OK?

Looks good! I'm anxious to hear back from you once you've had a chance to take her out on the water. Do you have any idea what it weighs?
