Official 390 E.C. Thread

The drains on my mufflers are not pipe thread(standard plug threads are tapered).

The drain is a straight bolt with oversize washer head, and a rubber gasket that compresses against side of muffler.Guessing at3/8 -16 or 1/4 -20?????

My muffler drains are also straight threads with a bolt that has a wide flat flange as part of the bolt. I actually drilled mine out to 3/8" course thread and installed new bolts with neoprene washers. 5 years work great.

Engines idle fine, starboard lever always needed to be further forward while on plane to sync. Lever continually drifts back so has to be continually held in position. While this is a pain I have tolerated but this past weekend I have had to go Wot on starboard to get on plane and sometimes that won't get me there so I have to back off both engines and try again. Once I can get it on plane it goes back to having to keep starboard lever slightly advanced Any body here have any ideas to look at?

well I am not a expert but I had the same type of problem last year trying to get it to plane, I did check my trim tabs to make sure they where working and they where. I read in the form here where others had added another set of 12 inch tabs in the center, I added a set and now I can plane 3000 and do about 20 mph by the gps. It was well worth the 500 we spent on the tabs before we had to run at 4000 rpm and still not on plane. I think you can adjust the throtle tension. Hope this helps I am still learning myself.

As far as the throttle creeping you can adjust the tension on the throttle levers by removing the 2 piece cover on the throttle controls and adjusting the tension screws underneath. As far as having to advance the throttle further on one engine further than the other it can be a simple matter of adjusting the cables at the carburetors or having to perform mechanical repairs in order to make both engines perform the same.

it can be a few things, from your prop be fouled or dinged that its taking more power to spin it, when was the last time the fluids were changed in the trans. when was the last time you had a tune up and fuel filters changed?

Nick's stupid question of the day:

There's some non-oem stuff going on around my transom door, and i'm wondering what an unmolested pic looks like relative to what I'm looking at. See below.

I'd like to get rid of whatever this is, but I want to know what's udnerneath to try to understand why this is there before i start cutting and prying.

On my 87 390E Sea Ray was nice enough to leave a one inch gap in the glass deck allowing water to FLOW in to the bilge under the teak that was hiding the gap. Maybe that is what the aluminum is covering. Why do you want to cut and pry?? I ground it all down and glassed over the gap.

It just looks so crappy like they just threw it together. The same diy craftsmanship I keep finding on things like the helm seats, which also desperately need to be rebuilt properly.

It makes sense though if they were trying to replace a leaky seam under old teak. I guess I'll leave it be for now.

Looks like I'm about to join the fold here. I've found and put a deposit on an 88 390EC. She's passed the survey very well so far. Sea trial and Haul Out is Tuesday. Wish me luck.

Sorry to keep you waiting. :) Been working a ton this week.

She passed the Sea Trial and Haul Out. Nothing except fresh bottom paint and a depth sounder transducer needed. Ran her up to 27 MPH on the GPS. No vibes, noises or other weirdness.

It's a very clean and well maintained boat. It's as if I owned it. To give an idea how well kept it is I can walk in the bilge barefoot without getting dirty.

Stringers are dry. Water Tank was replaced 5 years ago before it leaked. Already has a wood floor. No leaks in the cabin windows.

The only downside is the canvas is near the end of it's life but is still serviceable.

Going to look for dockage here on the Space Coast today.

If everything goes according to plan I'll bring her home the first week in August.

Update: One week from today I head down to complete the purchase. I'll then head back down to pick her up on the 5th.

Bringing it back home to Merritt Island and have a slip for her less than 1/2 mile from where she was originally built.

She's scheduled to be hauled out a couple days after arrival for bottom paint, a transducer swap and the addition of a set of 12x12 trim tabs between the prop tunnels.

Wish me luck. :)

I inquired on that too. The owner kept it behind his house and only has 15 amps of 110 dockside. He used it instead of the AC to keep the cabin livable in the non sweltering days.

Either way there are Definitely no leaks nor evidence of in the headliner, anchor locker or any of the cabinets. No water in the bilge anywhere even below the water tank looking through the access hatch he added.

No Wet Boat mildew smell even with my head stuck in the floor hatches. I took so many deep breaths smelling around that I nearly passéd out. I spent nearly an hour in the cabin looking for evidence of leaks or water of any kind and couldn't find any.

The owner was a glass man (Glazer) by trade and he kept her well sealed in addition to spotless clean inside and out.
