Official 390 E.C. Thread

ht1.jpght2.jpght3.jpght4.jpg Well Hard top is done and ready to pop out of the mold. will have on the boat by Thursday and will post more pics.

Saverio, I built the mold as you see and then filled all the joints with filler and sanded smooth. Once happy with the mold then you wax with mold release wax and spray with PVA. I then rolled the Gel Coat into the mold and allowed to cure overnight. I will let you know how it worked LOL. The underside which is what you see in the pictures I will sand and fill as needed. I will then paint with Awlgrip. I wanted to gel coat for finish but the top deck needs to be re done and I don't want to do that with Gel Coat so I moved to Awlgrip for everything above the water line. I will post pictures once it is on the boat... I hope Wednesday, I am welding the Aluminum supports tonight, will pop the top out of the mold tomorrow and install Wednesday.

On a side note, watch the AC duct that feeds the mid state room and forward state room. The SBD side window has a blacked out plexi that goes into this section and they leak there and rot out the bottom of the duct cabinet. They are no fun to repair either.

So what does the cross section look like? Is it cored? How many plies of glass? How thick? No structural stiffening?

I used 3/4 Nydacore (honeycomb poly board). I put two layers of 1.5oz mat then the core, I added a 4" section of salt treated ply along the outside edge of the top to make installation of curtains less difficult, then two layers of 1.5oz mat. I am going to see how stiff it is when it come out of the mold, if I think stringers are needed I will add them prior to installation on the boat. I have the materials to glass in stringers but don't want them if I don't need them. From all my calculations and talking with the core people, I should not need them. I should end up a little more than an inch thick. I will glass what is left of the radar arch to the top once it is on the boat. I think it was you Doc that told me to check the core on the boat and bottom of arch which I did and had to replace. I will bed the arch with 4200 and add three button head SS bolts through the arch and hull at the logo.

Sounds nice and stiff. Good plan to use preservative salt on the plywood. Glass the top to the radar arch? Just remember - if you ever have to pull the engines, the radar arch and top have to come off. Like the idea of SS carriage bolts to secure the arch. I had not thought of that. I am not sure you should 4200 the arch to the boat. The bolts should be adequate. I have been using butyl window bedding strips to seal hardware to deck. Good seal and easily removed.

I am looking at late this year. You saw my engine installation video? http://youtu.be/vH5l9N_TfXE

I just spent 3 weeks in Italy. Stopped in to see Pietro's Moonchild IX and got inspired by his 390. His boat is a yacht! Mine is merely a boat! If anyone has any question about the quality of Pietro's 390 - let it be known that it has my "Seal of Approval"!

Some Video in Italy of Pietro's "yacht"

What a great day!!! I finally got the chance to talk about my boat with someone who can really understand me!!! We should have embarked for a 15 day cruise!

It was a big emotion meeting after all this time sharing experiences on the CSR without knowing each other in person.
Al and his wife Linda are wonderfully friendly people and spending one day on my 390, sharing boating experiences and cooking past aboard, made a big memory for all of us!

I have now to wait for Al to launch his “yacht” and then plan my trip to Florida… :smt001

Pietro, do you use a med mooring there? I see no forward pilings

Great videos of an awesome boat.
I had the opportunity to board a late 80's 390 EC this past winter and have a look around. I have to say that it has to be one of the best laid out boats that I've ever seen.
I really love my 300 Sundancer, but if I were looking to move up, the 390 EC would be on the short list.

No pilings, no side dock...yes, pure med mooring! :smt021

Al was kind of shocked when he realized how complicate is to moor at my marina!

I was wondering if anyone knew what the diameter and length of the water tank vent hose is?

I'm having an issue while I fill the water tank. The tank doesn't seem to vent properly, the tank was replaced and bulges when being filled. When full it doesn't discharge through the vent hole as it used too. I did notice water running down the vent hose after filling the tank so i suspect the fitting or the hose has a blockage. The boat is an hour away or I would just stop by and take the measurement to get a replacement.

This thread has been very useful and thank you everyone for the advice.

I've never done it but witnessed it several times in Mergellina Napoli and on Ischia. It's a beautiful thing when done correctly especially when the captain makes it look like parking a Fiat!!!!
