Official 390 E.C. Thread

The problem with foam is that there is no real structure provided. I am using honeycomb board as it is very light and provides real structure.

I wish that my boat was a year or two newer as my seats do not curve like this and my seat bases are made of wood instead of fiberglass. Another thing that ticks me off is the weird angle of my seat backs. They should not be raked back so much. They should be more erect or vertical as they are uncomfortable at the helm and bang into the head of anyone seated behind.

They didn't start out that way, they have over time bent the seat back rearward from leaning on them. A friend of mine made some new pieces of aluminum and they are now completely upright.

I like the way mine reclines now.

All my seats are three years old the. The previous owner told me he spent close to 8K I wish their was something you can modify the helm seat compartment??? you put stuff in their its like a black hole I cant reach it anymore????? the opening way to small

I guess that the only way to address that would be to remove the seats and take all of the vinyl upholstery off to get to these pieces of aluminum. What a PITA!!!

Not to burst your bubble, but I understand that the 1989 and 1990 seat bases will not fit the side walls and raised foot rest on the pre-'88 390EC's.

I went thru this with my '88 model in about 1991 when the seat base molds were still available at Merritt Island. I would have preferred to use the fiberglass bases, but it turned out to be a blessing that I did not. I found a local yacht services company and worked with them to redesign the bases. We ended up with mahogany plywood with all the end grain bound and epoxy sealed with solid mahogany. The finished product was AwlGripped to match the arctic white gelcoat and we finished the teak rope locker lid in natural gloss varnish. All the teak binding was removed and the corners were radiused. I saw the boat last summer and it is too bad the gelcoat hasn't held up as well as the seat bases (22 years). A side benefit is the owner of the company that made the seat bases has ended up being one of my best friends and has taught me a ton about wood working and wood finishing.......and making smoked sausage from wild pigs.

Some more pics of hardtop project. Some sanding and paint and what's left of the arch will be done image.jpg

I have a question for you two experts. Why do some 390 have bow mounted dock lights? was that an option? Pietro I love looking at your picture your boat looks like it wearing a black cape. ok I think I'm going through withdraw now and starting to sound goofy

The dock lights were there when I bought the boat... they give the bow a more aggressive look but are totally useless for me!

Yes, it looks great in black! I was so unsure to go from the original burgundy to black, but I'm totally satisfied now!

I also noticed theirs a few differences in the interior. I have no tamer type doors. All mine are solid one piece doors. I also don't have the stools or the counter they slide under? mine has also big vertical cabinets that wrap around. not sure if the were added? they do look like OEM.
