Official 330 Sundancer Thread

Ironically, the same noise thing happened to me last weekend. I was trimming the boat and went bow high and the noise happened. When I lowered the bow, it disappeared. At first I thought I had blown an exhaust hose off a manifold. BTDT. Repeated the action a couple of times. The gauges never faltered.

The only thing I could think of is the exhaust gasses were being sucked in to the prop and driven out the back. However, the explanation of fouled underwater exhaust is plausible. Maybe at a certain running angle and a certain current, a back pressure is created against the underwater exhaust.

I am planning a trip this weekend weather permitting and am going to go under her to see if there is any explanation.

The reason behind the dual exhaust system is to make the exhaust quieter. I don't know what year the transition took place, but having ridded in both you can definately tell the difference.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, we were up and cruising at 3200 RPMs and all of sudden the exhaust became noticeably louder. I think only on the port side. At the time I kept an eye on my gauges and everything was fine and I continued running back to the marina with the loud exhaust.

After this I started to look into why these boats have dual exhause, meaning underwater and above the water line. Someone told me the side exhaust is there as a check, so you can see that water is making it through the system and that your water pumps are pushing the water well. I was also told at some point once the boat is picking up speed the suction it creates pulls the exhaust through the underwater exhaust and that at crusing speed the side exhaust really doesn't do much... I have no idea if this is true, but my theorey was that for some reason my port side switched from underwater to the side, hence the increase in exhaust noise.

I'd love for someone more knowlegable to explain the reason behind this dual exhaust system... :smt013
Isn't the whole idea to make it quieter, and reduce the exhaust fumes coming abroad???

As far as I know, there is nothing but atmospheric pressure involved in influencing which outlet flows the most.

Thanks for the replys so far. I also think that the dual exhaust out the side and under the boat is a quick check for water pumping. I think the idea of the exhaust getting louder after hooking some weeds might have some merit since the Mississippi is FULL of duckweed this year. My port side was running a little warmer, and we stopped at a marina and I replaced the port water pump. The wear plate had some grooving, but the impeller was fine. A check with a friends infrared temperature indicator showed that my guages run about 20 degrees warmer than true temp. Also, the noise was definetly coming from the underwater exhaust.

We are just leaving Pettebone Boat Club in LaCrosse, Wi, and won't have internet access until we get back to Dubuque next weekend, but keep those replys coming, and if I find a definitive answe, I will post.

Underwater exhaust

My take on how it works

The main advantage of an underwater system is noise suppression the dissadvantage of underwater systems are when the boat is at rest (or slow speed) as exhaust gas and water would "Bubble" up and create unwanted noise and and vibrations so the solution is to have an Above water outlet for staionary or slow speed and then transition to the underwater system when under way, the way the system does this is by haveing a check valve in the "above water" outlet baffle that allows the exhaust and cooling water to pass through at idol (and slow speed and when the boat picks up speed the Venturi effect on the underwater outlet creates a least path of resistance to the exhaust gasses and cooling water that the majority of exhaust and cooling water exits this way. The Above water exit is not big enough in diameter for the exhaust gasses to exit at mid to full rpms alone without causing excessive backpressure within the exhaust sysem and engine damage could result if underwatre system blocked !!!

Hi all

I have recently had made two new moulds (taken from my original air intake vent covers) for my boat and as the owner of the moulds I can supply new GRP (Glass reinforced Plastic) covers that fit perfectly and are much much stronger than the original units.

I can supply them for £75 (uk Pounds) each side plus P&P and I am willing to ship worldwide.

Regards

Tony

If anyone need to see hi res pictures of the ones I have fitted to my boat (without any adjustments) then please contact me directly at tonycclark@aol.com

Tony:

Please e-mail me a picture of the air intake at dpmulvey@gmail.com

How do you like the Steyr's. What is the fuel consumption. Are you experiencing less hull turbulence with the 15*15 props?

TIA

David

The boat is a completely different boat with the 4 blade props, new cutlass bearings and enlarged trim tabs, so much so that SWMBO even likes going out in it.

We have taken the boat to the westcoast of Scotland as this is a far better cruising area for us in the UK some would say the best area in Europe.

During the positioning trip from our home port of Peterhead we had a porblem with the Stb engine, a very severe knocking sound and after shutting it down and limping into the nearest port I discovered that the crankshaft pulley was loose !!!!! and even after re torqueing the bolts the engine still had a very terminally sounding "Knock" so I removed the engine and sent it back to the supplier (75 hrs on the clock and one day out of warrenty !!!!!!!).

The engine supplier stripped the engine and discovered the crankshaft broken and some five weeks later they returned my rebuilt engine (under warrenty as it would appear that the pulley bolts had loosened off and the resultant vibrations have caused the crank to break through fatigue) for me to install and we once again set of to our new mooring on the west coast, during this downtime I fitted the new props, cutlass bearings along with the new fabricated trim tabs including the Bennett trim tab position indicator switches. The rest of the trip through the Caledonian canal (loch Ness) was uneventful and since putting some 30 hrs on the engines since its rebuild has restored my love for them they are very responsive and fuel efficient (although I have yet to quantify the actual fuel burn rate).

We are getting 25 knots at 3600 rpm with full fuel and water with 2 POB and WOT is 4100 but I am still taking it easy on the revs for a while to ensure that the engines are fully bedded in, and the new trim tabs are working great allowing a much flatter running attitude

Forgot to say that, I love the semi hard top that you have fitted to your boat any chance of some close up pictures and info on getting one for me

In regards to my question about the sudden loud exhaust noise, I think I have the answer as to why it does it, but not how. The upper Mississippi has had a lot of what we call duck weed this year because pf persistently high water. It is like a carpet of grass floating, and cannot be always avoided or seen. Away Point mentioned it happening when he hooked some weeds, so I payed close attention to what was triggering the noise. Sure enough, once I felt something snag on the bottom. It felt just like I hooked a livingroom sized carpet. The attitude of the boat changed, and when I tabbed it back to level, the sound started. If I would come off plane and reverse each engine, then go back on plane, the noise stopped until I hooked some more weeds. Just have to hope the water clears up soon.

If the weather breaks, I shall get some shots. The PO was rather fair skinned and did not want to mess with canvas after the first set so he had it custom constructed in North Carolina by a company who does the sport fishers here. There are plenty of companies in my area who fabricate them, however, I am sure the shipping would be cost prohibitive. Although, in that you are handy with GRP, I am sure you could manufacture one yourself.

The ones I saw last year at a local boat show were glass over a honeycomb core. Extremely light and extremely strong.

My only caution would be the height. I am 6'4". I have more lumps on my head from stepping up to the helm than I can count. If I were to do it over, I would have to raise it somehow. The biggest issue with that is it takes from the lines of the boat. From what I have been told, one of the reasons the arch on the 340 was taller than the 330 was from customer complaints.

Let me know what you need in regards to measurements and I shall try to accomodate.

Well, I hope I'm not stepping on toes here but I did a search and could not find another thread that was devoted to 330's.

So here it is!

To all my fellow 330 owners, please say hello.

Regards,
Tim
what a beautiful boat, just like mine that plies the fresh waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan.
one quick question, what is the condition of your dash board?

Steves

Search this site and you will find a couple of good threads about this issue. Yes they all fade (at least the mid 90s issue ones do). If it bothers you, there is a company that fabricates replacements that look great.

Anyone have issues of a septic smell in the cabin area ? It appeared initially when my sump in the shower box went bad and leaked into the emergency sump area. Changed bad sump an cleaned emergency area with clorox but still remains pungent on occaisions. Blew out all lines and pumped out. Now airing out but my wife thiks it is from the A/C unit ! Any ideas welcome because the admiral is not happy !!

What size hot water tube do I have on my 1997 330? The elbow just in front of the port engine - right at the bottom of the bulkhead - the hot water (red tube) keeps loosening. WEST carrys a Whale elbow for 15 mm tube. When I check at McMaster-Carr's site the largest they carry fits 14mm tube.

1/2 inch, is what I have, you can find the e-z connect at lowes or home depot
make sure that you use the tube insert that comes in package if you get the one at lowes.

For what it's worth my 97 330 has 15mm plex tubing. So 15mm fittings is what I need. The hot water heater on mine is an Attwood. They have 1/2" NPT fittings. So ideally I should have a 1/2" NPT to 15mm pipe adapter on there. They don't come with them and Attwood does not have one. I've seen them at www.freshwatersystems.com and they are copper and are about $8 each. I plan on getting two next season and fixing the crappy job that exists there now when MM did the install last year...

These things. Which were on the hot water heater they took off and they worked but they threw them out and used the cheap plastic ones that came with the Attwood heater... UGH do I sound disgusted...

I had this problem in my 95 330 recently. First of all, if that mid bilge area is carpeted like mine was, rip it out! I used bleach and water also with less that satisfactory results. When I went up to the marina to get some bilge cleaner to try, one of the mechanics said he was working on a boat trying to get that smell out, and he found that Shout liquid stain remover was the only thing that finally worked. I used Castrol Super Clean, lots of water to get rid of the suds, and some elbow grease. I used a drill pump to pump out most of the water between rinsed, finished it off with a wet vac, then air dried it with a fan. Make sure you pull the top off your shower sump and clean that first though.

After that, the cabin doesn't have that sour smell any more.

I didn't try the Shout this time, but will probably try it nest time I clean out that mid bilge.

Alegria, thanks. This fitting keeps working loose. I have a Whale 15mm to replace it. Bought at West. Maybe the O-ring wore out on the SeaTech. If the Whale fails I'll go to the Guest or ???
