Official 290 Sundancer Thread

Hello everyone. I became the proud owner of a 1994 SeaRay Sundancer 290 today. I am upgrading from my old 91 Bayliner Cierra 2655. I take possession of her on Friday and can't wait to do it. I here is a link to some pictures of her.

It has the cover and bimini top, but I don't have the full enclosure for it. Does some make one for them?

So we closed on our boat two weeks ago. They were doing compression checks found two cylinders at 40psi. It was a blown head gasket and considerable damage to the pistons and cylinders. So they are dropping in a brand new 7.4L with an 18 month warranty. Not to bad. :) We are also getting the LED underwater swim deck lights put on it. I can't wait to get out on the lake!

I have a 1994 290 Sundancer and I'm hoping someone could tell me what size bulbs I have in my cockpit, on the arch and indirect under the seat. I live 3 hours from my boat and I forgot to pull the bulbs out of the light fixtures. From what I understand the bulbs are different, but the fixtures look the same. I would like to change the bulbs to a less heat, blue LED color. I'm going to buy them from Super Bright LED's.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Yes, we just bought our 290 from a guy in MA (Cape Cod). The boat only had 96 hours on each 5.0 MPI engine. At 136 hours, we found out two of the spark plugs had melted and melted their respective cylinders on the port engine. There was a distinct fuel odor in the exhaust from the get go. So, fuel was obviously mixing with the oil and getting into areas it should not have been getting into due to the bad plugs/cylinders. $6,000 later, we have a new 5.0 (remanufactured). Trouble is we dont know what really caused this and certainly dont want it to happen again. Bummer...

I've got a 1998 SR 290 DA, I'm the original owner, great boat, never had any problems with her. Looking to move up to a 340DA so we're selling our 290!

Good to see this thread still alive. All is running well for us this year, only replaced an impeller on the genset...everything else is all good so far.

We got our boat in May, after having new Jasper engine put in. We've had 0 problems with the engine since picking it up. I did change my props out to 20 pitch to help my hole shot and get up on a plane with a full load better. Still get's up to about 32 at around 4200rpm. It will go up to 4600-4700 but I don't like to push it. I have had to replace the Charger and this week the A/C... :( Blowing the breaker every time I turn it on. If I flip it enough times it comes on and stays on. Everyone I have talked to said it sounds like the compressor. So I bought a new Cruisair 1600BTU unit. I have also replaced the norcold fridge.. So I understand the meaning of BOAT..

looks like I will be joining the 290 club. i just put a deposit down on a 2006 290. Is there anything I should look for that is a known problem for these boats? A marine survey will be done next week to see that it checks out ok since this is a sight unseen purchase.

it was between this boat and a 2006 300 15k more for the 300 just didnt seem like it was worth it. hope im right

Welcome to the club! I think you'll love it. I know I did a TON of research from 260s to 320s before I purchased and I am not at all unhappy with my choice.

I have only had mine since January (bought then - delivered in March), so I am not sure of any common problems with the 290. I can tell you about problems I have had with my 2008 290DA, but they aren't with the 290 specifically.

I'm not aware of any issues specific to the 290. But I think you will see common problems along this generation of boats. KEC DVD player; sump pump, nor cold fridges, carpet backing, water psi sensors etc.

My question- does anyone have a transom mounted stereo remote? I have the smaller non-display version of the clarion remote waiting to be installed but before I drill a 2 inch hole I'd like some ideas of where they are generally mounted. Thanks.

I recently joined the sea ray family and purchased a 1993 sun dancer 290. I have been more than pleased with the quality which this boat was built and I'm surprised with the performance for it's size. It has the single 7.4 engine and has a cruise speed of 22-25 mph @31-3300 rpms and runs around 33-36 mph @ 35-3800 rpms. I've not pushed it past that but it feels strong like it's has more to give, I'm not sure what the standard rpms or max rpms should be for this engine/ boat, so any advise would be nice. Other than small maintenance this boat seems built to last. I'm about the update the upholstery and bring some modern technology into this vessel since I can't afford a new one at this time. I'm proud to be part of the sea ray family and just wanted to say hi to the board.

Thanks. I,d like to put by ladder so I'll probably put it under the area where the transom shower is mounted.

Soundwave- welcome. Look on this site for another thread that focuses on your generation of 290. It's a good one and will likely have more people that can be helpful on your set up. Good luck and welcome again.
