Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Mike,
On my 2001, with twin 4.3's, the fresh water tank is forward of the Port engine. The gen is forward of the starboard engine. I actually moved my water tank to port about 2", to gain easier access to the coolant bottle on the gen. You can sort of see some pictures at www.ourcayoloco.com.
Thanks,
Mike

Wish I could send a pic. the fresh tank is directly forward of the waste tank. If you use the engine room opening as a line the waste sits aft that line and the fresh forward. The generator is not on center line but Just starboard. Fuel feeds from starboard motor 3rd in line. I'm not sure where you would put the water intake line which is through the hull. You don't want to do that so unless you somehow couple a line to another opening. My intake is through starboard hull and the discharge is to port above water line of course.

cooling and ventilation (CO breathing in is not a good day) will be tougher than electrical unless it's there already. I don't know what sea Ray did on those hulls in factory.

Thanks everyone - looks like there were a few different comfigurations :)

...and! Moving things around to fit particular needs, other than the lines needing to be long enough etc doesn't strike me as a particular issue.

Wiring the generator in shouldn't be too much trouble, it will never be fully "factory" anyway. Yes, blower switch and generator start to be close to each other etc, got that. It isn't a 5 min project but certaibly not weeks of work. First things first, need to convince the admiral, find a suitable boat...sell the old, a long project.

Thanks Mike! Importing (I'm in Europe) is not impossible however needs to be generally in the vicinity of the east coast. My budget is in the $40k range-ish.

Looks nice!

however i was hoping to find a boat with MPIs, Smart Craft and the plain seats in the dinette, preferably a 2004 or maybe 2005 budget permitting.

anyway, way ahead of the real process here, admiral hasn't approved and just yesterday a bit of a setback professionally that needs a few weeks to sort through. i'll be back.

Mike,

If he is in Europe he would also have to convert the AC voltage to 220/230. That would mean he'd have to replace all of the appliances.

Haddock,

Try contacting CSR member Melida. He is in Turkey (and a 280 owner) and may be able to give you some EU contacts.

I'm kind of surprised you want gassers instead of diesel. What do you see as the advantage?

No worries on the 240->120V, a simple transformer is all that's required. Quite a common addition, placed in the rear trunk before feeding into the shoreline connection. My current boat is also imported from upstate NY.

Yes, the pleats, couldn't quite get the right wording :)

Hi

Don't have much choice...however the ideal boat would be a well maintained (read meticulous owner), fresh water only, T4.3 mpi's with 1000hours on them. One or two seasons...and then junk the 4.3's and install modern 250hp diesels. That would mean cruising speeds of approx 35mph and about 2.5mpg diesel consumption or possibly just less. However, that is another chunk of 40-50k investment.

Other diesel alternatives with that kind of performance, layout and total cost are fairly rare. Bavaria 32 sport, Windy 32 scirocco (though a worse layout) are the only competitors. Doing the same conversion to a Bayliner 3055/305 is also possible. All these alternatives though are wider and heavier and I steuggle in my dock to get over 3m20cm wide...

I recently put a deposit on a 2001 280 with the single 6.2. I was in a friends with the 7.4? and it seemed to be fine. The 6.2 has more hp. I am just getting nervous it cant get out of its own way and will be a dog on the gas. Anyone have this setup or any info? I love everything else I have seen. Waiting until next month for sea trial.

All I can say is I hope it is one heck of a deal! Having a 280, I can say that is a lot of weight to move for a single gas engine, but I am preferable to twins anyway.

If you change your mind, let me know. I can hook you up!

I think a 2001 280 with a 6.2 is going to be underpowered. I had a 07 I sold last summer with a single big block 496 mag and with 5 or 6 people on board it struggled a bit. Boating isn't much fun with a underpowered boat. Ive been there

Load it up as you would use it for the sea trial. Full fuel tank and water tank and the number of people you'd generally have on board. If it doesn't perform as you like then you can back out. I know you'd then lose money on a survey and adding fuel to the tank. But you won't be the first to do that.

SkiMaxum,
I guess that is about what I have seen the single engines go for. Lowest I could do is 40, since its under brokerage. Mine was repaired in 2012, with around 100 hours now. Is 160 the original hours? That seems extremely low.
