Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Hello,

Newbie here, before i posted i wanted to make sure this is this the correct place to ask about a 14 or 15 280, i am looking into getting into one and had some questions.

thank you

Not really, the current production model is completely different in size and design to the one (01-09) that is primarily discussed in this thread. Sea Ray had a model number shift around 2009.

There is an Official thread for the newer 280 but I cant find it at the moment.

Thanks, i was looking also but didnt see anything. Im looking for some info before i pull the trigger.

Jim, i am starting to see that flake off in the center as well. What "repairs" did you or will i have to make before the bilgekote goes on ?

Brian,

I patched it with gelcoat and then painted the entire bilge. I did this while the engines were pulled to replace the steering pins.

Okay, maybe a stupid question, but where are all the 280 owners? No posts in over 2 weeks?

Ripping off the deckboards of their dock and getting ready to replace with new composite decking. Oh yeah, that and boating. Been 80+ here for a couple of weeks now.

Anybody have Ideas how the gelcoat in the bottom center of the engine room could crack and start peeling as in this picture? The dark copper color is the fiberglass of the hull. Anyone heard of this before?

I'm looking at this boat as a potential purchase and wanted to know if this is something serious or not a big deal. Other than the chipped gelcoat, the engine room is very clean. Only 90 hours on the engines.
I had the same on my 300. Frank Webster gave some good insight. http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/43757-HELP!-What-s-going-on-in-my-engine-compartment

I was always wanting see specs on the 280's with diesels. Anyone ever seen one in the uS?

Mike here are a couple of pics of my diesel engine

Hi

Don't have much choice...however the ideal boat would be a well maintained (read meticulous owner), fresh water only, T4.3 mpi's with 1000hours on them. One or two seasons...and then junk the 4.3's and install modern 250hp diesels. That would mean cruising speeds of approx 35mph and about 2.5mpg diesel consumption or possibly just less. However, that is another chunk of 40-50k investment.

Other diesel alternatives with that kind of performance, layout and total cost are fairly rare. Bavaria 32 sport, Windy 32 scirocco (though a worse layout) are the only competitors. Doing the same conversion to a Bayliner 3055/305 is also possible. All these alternatives though are wider and heavier and I steuggle in my dock to get over 3m20cm wide...

Hi, if you consider a loaded diesel 280DA mine is currently for sale and it is badged as 315DA means European version/CE certified/220 volt AC etc, PM me if interested.

So my Clarion XMD3 is almost dead. The unit comes on but I cannot get any response from the buttons on the unit or from the wired remote control. I have tried the reset button with no success. Is there a unit that would be a plug and play with the existing connections? What would be a reasonable option to replace it with? Any help would be appreciated.

Eddie

I have a good Clarion CMD6 minus the plug in wire-harness that I just removed from my 320 that works fine. I just replaced it about a month ago with a Clarion M303 with built in bluetooth and left the harness in place since it is plug and play. I believe the CMD6 and yours uses the same harness. You are welcome to mine at no cost other than shipping if you like. If not, I would suggest the M303. Not expensive and has more ability than the CMD6. Just made a black plexiglass bezel as a surround since the newer unit is a 1 Din size.

I'm replacing my batteries and I have a question on what type I should get. I have 3 batteries. 2 are connected together and are for the house and one engine. The other single battery is for the generator and one engine. Need to know if I should get cold cranking or deep cycle or both.

I believe the batteries are all connected to the charger (or convertor). If that is the case, and you are in a slip with constant shore power, they should all be of the same type because different type batteries have different charging profiles. The first battery that reaches full charge triggers the charger to shut down. As a result if one charges faster the the other, the other will never fully charge.

I've always replaced mine (2) as a set so that they would be in equal condition. I'm not sure that is necessary with your setup, but it may make sense if they are all the same age. I've also had good luck with the dual purpose batteries.

I put (3) Group 31 DieHard Platinum Marine AGM Batteries in my 280DA back in 2010 and it was probably the best single upgrade I ever did. Gave me plenty of runtime for fridge and other DC equipment. Just sold the boat and they were still perfectly fine 5 years later. It is an expensive investment up front but well worth it.

Greg,

I appreciate the offer but I got extremely lucky and found a Reman XMD3 in the box. I guess it pays to search everywhere. Found it in Riverside California...

Hi Jason, Congrats on selling your boat. Do you mind if I ask what you got for her?

I would like to replace my original Raymarine 215 VHF radio as my mic cord has virtually disintegrated plus a little update would be nice. Does anyone have a recommendation for a similar sized radio? Also, in general do you have to replace the whip antenna when you change radios or are they relatively universal? Photo of current install, not the best I know.

When I had my 280, I replaced the radio with a Garmin VHF 200, added a Garmin GPSMAP 720, and networked them together along with a MercMonitor over N2K. Nice install. Here are a few pics...

The radio worked very well...better than the original Raymarine unit and way better than the Northstar NS100 that is in my 300DA (considering an upgrade this summer). I used the original antenna and wiring. The Garmin radio is a little taller and not quite as wide so the opening need to be made a little taller. I added a mounting plate that fit the radio pretty well and made-up for the difference in the width of the opening.

bajturner, Thanks so much for that. It looked like a great install. I'd like to put a decent one in but in the end this will be for a new owner as she will be going up for sale shortly. Thanks for the feedback.
