Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Barely un-seal and let oil drain back in to the engine. Usually takes mine about 10 min. Assuming you have the Merc filters, that is.

I do have the Merc filters and will be replacing with the same. Thanks for the info!

No problem. I always place a wad of paper towels under the remote filter tray too just to be sure. Your capacity will depend on how you are removing the old oil. I normally add 4 quarts and then add the 5th quart in increments checking along the way. I think last time mine took 4 quarts each. Not sure about the V6 capacity.

Thanks Inmotion, I'm try it next week and let you know, thanks again!! Are you running 17 merc vengenance SS props??

Swaldrop I'm running the standard 17pitch Vengenance, that all 280s seeem to have. Like you I do have a RPM difference between the two engines, but only about 120, also I had one engine replaced, due to a cracked block so one has a little more kick that the other which may account for it!

Just wanted to let everyone know I have finally some of the original White Rubber Bumpers that go on the deck for the windshield to rest on and behind the transom door.

The Sea Ray p/n is 334672

The one on my deck is cracked and rotten from the sun. I have looked and looked for the original part that goes with this number and have never been able to find the original part, even direct from Sea Ray- until now.

See, at some point in the last year or two, SR switched vendors and the replacement part for the same number was not the same shape and would not have worked well, particularly on the deck. Maybe I am just picky but I wanted the correct, original part.

I have been calling around for 6 months looking for them and finally found them at Marine Max in Tempe, AZ. I think they were about $2 or so each. They have a couple dozen left and I am not sure if there is any other old stock out there. If you need em, get em.

MarineMax Tempe AZ- 866-875-6217 ask for parts. When ordering, you may want to confirm you are getting the older style just in case they have a mix of the two on hand.

Here is a pic-

Is this the one that goes here, as show in my picture below! I posted about this on page 128 of this thread, but never heard from anyone. Hope there's one left for me!

Why'd you guys need two?! :smt089

Whew, got one (just one!). Thanks Jason!!

He's now down to 4...

My throttle seams to shift a bit hard, this is my first Sea Ray I don't know if this is normal. Are they supposed move stiffly or should they be stiff? to is there an adjustment or a way to lube so they move more freely?

I asked this same question about 20 pages or so back, shortly after I purchased my 280DA.My throttle is very stiff also, in comparison to my previous single I/O throttle. I took the cover off and looked for an adjustment, but didn't notice anything, so I'm not sure if there is an adjustment or not for the friction on the controls. I wish it were a little less. It makes it slightly more uncomfortable when approaching the dock and moving in and out of gear.

But I've only used it a few times, I'm sure I'll get used to it, if there is no adjustment. It would be interesting to hear with other owners though about what they think about it.

My port side is twice as stiff as my Starboard side:huh: I haven't had time to investigate. It also makes it hard to keep them synced when under way.

So is mine. I have electronic throttles - no cables. What can be done. I have not been able to figure out how to get the cover off. I don't see any screws and I don't just want to start prying it apart.

any adea?

Mercury seems to have made it harder to find manuals but go to Google and paste the following into the search box and hit Search. Not a guarantee but maybe you will find something that will help.

Paste the above exactly for your search term.

Ok, how do I verify whether I have shift cables, or electronic throttle?? Mine's only one year older! Are you talking about the SmartCraft DTS? If so, I know I don't have that...

On my throttles, there's a small regular/slotted head screw I can remove and then the black plastic cover comes off. But I didn't see anything else to do after that. No adjustments apparent.

There are drag adjustments for the throttles! (at least on my 2007). Mine felt stiff so I tried to loosen them but after I did they would not hold 1000rpm but would slip down to idle. It made it tough to go 5mph in my harbor.

It is easy, just a screwdriver. Pop the cover off and on the sides of the base are adjustment screws. I needed a 90-degree screwdriver for the starboard side. There is a thread here somewhere. I will look for it.

Thank you all very much the info has been very helpful.
Just starting to get my maintenance list together and start getting my boat ready for our first full season on the water. It helps make the time until launch pass faster. Thanks again everyone.

Do your throttles look like this? I need to find the model number and see if there is a user manual in my case, or online.

This is the best photo I have. I think the regular/slotted head screw to take the cover off is on the rear center lower area (under "Mercury").
