Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Get a survey duh  like you did not know to do that.

We love our 280SS not a SD.

We hate the outdrive maintenance and dual engines = twice the work and expense.

Lots of posts on blue hulls and if the boat has been sitting for 10 months you can see what it looks like with out any TLC.

Hey I know get them to throw in a new set of manifolds and risers.

Fishing Rod Storage

Where do you guys store your fishing rods while not in use? I have four rods that I've been storing under the aft bench seat on the floor. It works OK but it's not ideal. The lines get tangled and a hook got stuck in the carpet this weekend. Plus, I like to fold that seat down to fish and it's a lot of finagling to move all the rods.

What are your solutions?

Curiosity question: How long do you say your 280da is?
I guess it's 28' 6", but that rounds off to 29'
But you add in the swim platform and it's 30+'
So, I've called it a 28ft, a 29, a 30 and a 31, depending on who I'm talking to!

Same here. When someone asks, I say "The boat is 28 ft. It's 31 ft overall if you count the platform."

I personally feel it should be called a 310 since the platform is not "removable" (practically speaking) and it's an integral part of the boat even though it's bolted on. Think about it, how would you board the boat without the platform? You really need it so it should be counted. On the other hand, I think it's cheating to call it 31' when it's named a 280.

If I’m paying for a slip by the foot its 28 feet and our kids are well behaved and quite.

If I’m on my 5th drink and we are all playing the bragging game, my boat is 31’1” plus however long the anchor overhangs the front.

...31’1” plus however long the anchor overhangs the front./quote]

I think the 31'1" does include the anchor :smt017

Edit: the below information is not correct

The naked hull is 28’ 6”

The swim platform is 2’ 6”

The lip on the swim platform is 1"

Without the anchor the boat is 31’1”

You may be correct but I was going off this:

My yacht club charges by the foot for the overall length and I am billed for a 31 ft boat!
(I still don't know what to call it.....moderator, can I do a poll?)

Where do you keep your paper charts? I'm currently keeping this down below, under the TV, which is not the easiest to get to when underway. I'd prefer to have them close by in the locker / access panel under the helm. Anybody rig together some sort of holder on the back side of that door?

I was thinking of making a shallow plastic shelf on the back of the access door, but first curious as to what others are doing.

Under the mid cabin berth cushion. Close by if needed in a pinch; I use a chartplotter in normal operation. None of our guests has been enough of a princess to notice the bump under the cushion .

The Official 280 Sundancer thread was way back on the 4th page so I figured I would revive the thread because I need to complain. The weather in New England absolutely stinks this year, just ask Tony B from Providence. If it's not raining it is pea soup fog where I am at the entrance to Narragansset Bay. I am also having numerous minor issues with the boat seemingly every time I use it.

My boat is a 2004 with approx. 140 hours on the motors. This year I have had to replace both IAC valves about 1 month apart from each other. My main bilge stopped working and needed replacing. This past weekend my speedometer stopped working and Smartcraft showed a PITOT fault. Five minutes after that my alarm went off and showed a PSI fault.

So the bottom line is I know that these are all minor problems and I probably should be more thankful than angry. What I would love to know is what else can I expect to come up soon and what steps can I take to avoid the nuisance problems on my 280? Oh, let me mention that I am scheduled to take the boat to my mechanic tonight to get the PSI problem fixed but there are heavy t-storms on my doorstep. Did I mention the weather stinks????

KV, you've covered most of what is typical for that boat with those hours. The PSI problem is usually a sensor gone bad. You will have the trim sensors go bad most likely. These are minor problems in my opinion and most of them can be fixed easily and without much cost by the owner if he/she is willing to spend some time learning what to do. For example you will spend more time getting the boat to the mechanic than what it would take to change the sensor and fix the problem (assuming that is the problem).

Don't be discouraged. You have a great boat (I'm biased of course) which has served many owners (and SeaRay) well for a very long time. And most importantly, the weather will be great in August.

I think we got all the hot weather here in the pacific northwest...it's about 105 in Seattle right now. :smt001 We bought our 280 last month with 0.9 hrs on her and we've already racked up 57.5 hrs!! Mostly going out on Lake WA after work often and several nights out on Puget Sound. Blue Angels are in town this weekend doing the air show over the lake....should be great...wish you could be here!

We're off to our postponed Aquapalooza on Friday between the raindrops. It sounds like we have the Seattle weather on this end of the country. It was hot today about 92 and about 88% humidity.

Hello, I'm new here - so hello other 280 owners. Just picked up a Repo 2003 280 Sundancer last weekend. It is in pretty good shape. It has the 8.1L 496 MAG in it. Wondering what the cruise RPM should be for this engine?

It has all the fixings, except a generator. So my A.C., etc. only works on shorepower. I'll probably pick up a Honda Generator or Yamaha Generator to put on my swim platform for next summer if I decide I need it when out on the lake for a night out.

I haven't played around with the appliances much yet, but I believe the Fridge does not work unless plugged into shore power correct?

Also, when tying up to other boats we usually store 4 larger 8.5" diameter fenders on the boat. Where does everyone store them? I tried to mount one of those Windline stainless double bumper holders on the railing and didn't like it very much and it hinders the view a little. Wondering what others do.

Also, mine came with the standard Clarion stereo head unit with CD player and a 6 disk CD changer. It has the Clarion wired remote on the dash. Can this stereo be hardwired to use a IPOD?

Also for the trim tabs, there is no gage on the dash showing what position they are in. Not a big fan of that, does everyone live with this or is there a different gage that can be installed to show if they are all the way up or down (or somewhere in the middle position)?

I need to replace both gas shocks for the engine hatch as well. Hopefully thats not to hard of a task.
