Official 240 Sundancer Thread

Hello Islandhopper
I just posted questions on the 260 thread about low RPM vs. current prop. I am only getting around 3500 RPM on a boat I just bought. Everything else seems to be running well and pointing to over pitched prop (currently 24P). I may want to try 20P (theoretically adding 800 RPM). Let me know what you want for yours if you really want to sell them.
Thanks
Al

Hello Al, I posted it as a joke BUT!!! I have three sets so I could sell you a set if you need it. In fact I'll help you out. If they work for you buy them. If they don't send them back to me. I'll send you a message with contact information.

Just for info........

There is a Bravo III prop set 22" on the Charlotte craigslist for sale for $550.00

"Sold boat and have an extra set of 22" pitch props. call 33six-eight17-four5three0 before 10pm. $550 cash only".

Has anyone tried a set of 3 blade 24 pitch props with the 350 MAG? How much difference would that make? I've seen a few for sale on CL around me.

According to this chart looks like the standard prop is the same for both the 5.0 and the 350 MAG. Looks like the gear ratio is a little different though. Standard prop is a 20 pitch, so a 24 would probably be a bit aggressive wouldn't ya think?

70 hours into my new (to me) 2006 and so far only one issue - occasional water at the lowest step in the cabin. It's source cannot be the sump because I have not used the head sink or shower all summer. Instead, the appearance of water seems related to two events (1) washing the boat or (2) filling the fresh water supply. It seems the water appears several days after these events, which I tend to do together. Because I think washing the boat is not the culprit (it seems unlikely that enough water could leak in from the quick scrub and rinse I do) I am going to experiment and give it a wash and wait and see. My hunch is that my method of filling the tank - putting a hose in the fill pipe and running it until it overflows - may be allowing water in at the very top of the pipe, or leaving water in the fill pipe that leaks into the boat over time. I do not think the tank or the distribution piping is leaking as the step dries out while the tank has water and the sink up top is used. Otherwise - what a joy to own!

Dave, I have the same problem right now with mine. I have eliminated the washing and leaks from the windows and the rails as a source. The fresh water appears to be the source of the problem. I will be interested to see if you can find the fix. So far nothing I have tried works. Check your port side storage under the cushion, that's probably wet too.

I had to have the water fill rebedded, I 1st notice water in the port storage area under the cushions, then on the shelf further forward toward the bow eliminating the window as the leak.water was getting in from washing and heavy rain.

I will be checking it this week when I get a chance to spend some time with the boat. It should be all dried by now and then I will wash the boat to see if the water re-appears. I'm guessing it won't which should point toward the fresh water system. I am hoping that keeping the tank less than full will solve the problem.

A follow up - washed the boat yesterday and then went out for a 4 hour cruise. Low step was dry 4 hours after washing. I have a busy week so I may not be back to the boat until Saturday, but if the lowest step is still dry, that should rule out leaks in the hatch/windows etc.

Follow up on wet lower step. It has been bone dry for more than a week after a vigorous wash and rinse of the boat. I think this rules outs outside leaks. There is water in the fresh water tank and I have continued to use the sink in the cockpit. I have not used the sump all summer, so it could not have been the culprit for the more recent wet step - same for shower, kitchen sink or head sink. I think this points to filling the water tank - in the future I will not put a hose there and let it fill until it overflows. I never use that much water anyway - I can easily get by with filling it five gallons at a time or something like that.

There may be a vent hose on your fill. Find where that vent goes and have some one watch it when you fill. My guess is when you overfill the vent line is then getting water in it and draining to your bilge and then creeping forward to beneath your step area.

A 24" pitch will be more like higher gears, not really 'more aggressive'. It will give you a lower RPM at cruise but jumping up 4" in pitch may be too much for your power band.

Well, I've just recently "retired" from sailing, having sold my Catalina 34 last week. I have a contract on a '97 240 Sundancer and will sea trial and survey this coming Weds. Wish me luck! She's in pretty nice shape, with a 5.7L Mercruiser.
