Official 240 Sundancer Thread

Hey Guy's,

So...lets go on to fuel consumption on the 240 DA with the mercruiser 5.0 MPI 260 HP

In my search for info I came up with the following info:

Speed WOT max: consumption: 18,1 Gph
Speed: 42 Mph

At 3500 RPM: consumption: 15,2 Gph
Speed: 31 Mph

At 3000 rpm: consumption: 11.7 Gph
Speed: 23 Mph

At 2000 rpm: consuptions: ???
Speed: ???

At 1000 rpm consuptions: ???
Speed: ???

The above info is from boattest.com.

Can someone fill in the caps in the lower rpms??

Thanks!!

ps...the fuel price in holland is at record high at this moment. 1 liter = 1.77 euro.

Greetings,
Marco

Ah, I think I see. You guys are both pre-06 boats. Sorry about that.

I sure do miss the pics you used to post. Sometimes I go back and look at them. But, we need updated pics! Maybe while your out of work you can go get some for us!? yea!

Thanks for the compliment. I'd love to get out there and get more but the engines coming out to replace the coupler.

Hey Guys! I'm new to this thread but have owned a 23' SR Sorento a few years back. The grandkids are getting big enough to enjoy some fun on the water so i will purchase another SR and found a very afforsdable one. I'm going to look at a 1997 240 dancer w/5.7 @ 245 hrs. this Friday. Pictures look like it's pretty averae for it's age. It has shore pwr. but not much other options. No stove, but a nice new refridge. What should I be looking for with this boat? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.....

Do you have any pictures? How is the outdrive? I agree with getting a survey. Does it have vacuflush?

Hi Guys,

Well, I'm back!! I went to see this boat today! The entire boat has been aesthetically neglected for three years. The gel coat is slightly chalky (both the deck and sides), but the broker took a compounding wheel to a square foot of the gel coat on one side and the gel coat came right back up to shinny! There are NO tears in any of the vinyl seats (but they are filthy) and the carpet in the galley is pretty clean. There are no water stains anywhere on the walls or ceiling carpet in the galley, but there is a slight stain (very slight) on the ceiling of the mid-cabin. I especially looked closely at the carpet on the walls under the portholes and on the "V" berth cushions under the deck hatch. No stains anywhere..... The refridige has been removed and there is a non-boat refridge just sitting in the hole under the sink. Just SITTING THERE! Not secured in any way to the structure! It looks like a "dormatory" fridge from Wal-Mart that was set into the opening when the OEM fride was removed. Even the trim around the fridge opening was removed (I think the trim is part of the OEM refridge, and that is why it is not there). The engine is the 5.7 Merc and it looks average. Not completely free of rust, but not bad. There are 247 hours on the RPM guage clock. I found a log written by the original owner (I will be the third owner) wherein he states the bellows and serpintine belt were changed in 2007 at 105 hrs. so I know the engine hrs. on the clock must be correct. The outdrive is also very dirty, with scrapped off barnecle marks and all the zincs are 95% gone. It needs a really good cleaning with a wire brush, repainted and the zincs all replaced. There is a SS prop in good condition with just minor scrapes and dings. I have a boat/engine/trailer survey scheduled for next week (with a sea trial if needed) by a local Sea Ray / Mercruiser dealer service department. They also agreed to perform an inspection of the tandem trailer brakes, lines and lights and repack all the bearings. I really am getting this boat at a steal because it is so dirty. I have pictures if someone can tell me how to post them....

Todd, What is Vacuflush? I assume this is something to do with the porti-potty? The porti-potty in this boat is not the small short one, but it is the taller slightly larger one. There are two white hoses coming from out the back of it (one large and one smaller dia.) and passing aft through the wall. I could not see them when I looked for them in the engine bay. I did not see a holding tank in the engine bay either. Does this help answer your question?
Thanks everyone for your help, assistance and advice.... John

You need to post your picture to a site that will host them first, (example: photobucket.com). Once you have them hosted you can attached the image link to the body of your post here.

Is this one of the 240DA's I have seen on craiglist locally? I would be a little suspect at why the serpintine belt was changed with 105 hours on it. What was the reason the serpintine belt was changed at 105 hours. Sounds low. But they have put on 142hours since and it hasn't been changed? Sounds like a good seatrail is needed for sure and I would get the compression checked. If the bellows haven't been in the water in 3 years also I would take a good look to ensure there are not cracks there.

Vacuflush is the head system that has a vacuum type suction to suck the waste into the holding tank.

It sounds like your port~o~potty has the pump out feature but without the holding tank, just the small one it comes with.
Whatever you do please post some pics for us to give you more feedback. Do you have a link to the ad>? I know you risk someone scooping it, but I doubt anyone here would do that.

Alvin, Thanks for the responses. This boat was advertized on Boat Quest by a Marina/broker, not on Craigslist. The boat was only in storage from August of last season (not for three years). The marina owner has serviced this boat for the last three years that it was at his marina. I gave a deposit, so the dealer took down the ad so I cannot provide a link. sorry. A boat and engine survey is scheduled for tomorrow by another local Mercruser dealer. I asked him to go over everything...including a compression test, check for fuel and water leaks, and I want the engine and out drive oils checked for the presence of metal shavings and/or water, and also look at the bellows for signs of cracking.

Todd... Thanks for the responses, too. I checked on-line and found that the port-o-potty in this Sea Ray is the one that came with the boat, but with the pump-out feature.
Keep in mind guys that this boat is really dirty..... I will try to post pictures tonight, but I'm kind of embarrased to show pics of it when it is so filthy, but the before and after pics will be good to see.

Hey, Degree of Fredom... Did you ever get to replace the plastic door slides on the galley (cabin) with the new rollers and tracks? I want to do that too and was hoping you had some pics. The drawing you got from Sea Ray is very helpful, but how do you get to the seven screws that are shown to be holding the helm to the starboard side of the cockpit to remove them? The SR people did not explain that one like they did for removing the front brackets (they said to remove the instrument cluster and use a long screw driver to get to those screws)! Please let me know how this all worked out if you did do it. thanks... John

My bad. Read it wrong. :) Good luck with the Survey. Let us know how it works out. And post the pics when you get a chance.

Have a look at the thread when I bought my 260DA (2000). I was filthy and had some issues with the drive. I saw through the dirt, addressed the issues with the drive during the purchase and will tell you my 260DA is cleaner and shinier now than many new ones. It just takes a case or pallet of "L-bow-greez".
Best of luck.

Hey Dan, How did this work out for you? Did you replace the tracks with rollers? Was it hard to do? How did you gain access the seven screws that hold the dash to the starboard side?

OK Guys.... The engine checked out just great! Compression across all 8 cylinders was 156/162. The only issue was dirty oil in the out drive that needs to be changed and low water flow through the engine at idle (water flow is OK at 3500 RPM). Mechanic tells me this is an indication of a worn water pump impeller that needs to be replaced. I called the seller and he said he would cover these repairs! So, I now own a 1997 Sea Ray DA 240 !! Yay!

Hello, I'm a proud new owner of a 1997 Sundancer 240. I'm thinking about replacing the snap in carpet. Any suggestions where to go?

Thanks!
