Official 240 Sundancer Thread

Can I get some feedback on the top end on the 240 DA? I've got a 2001 with a 5.0L carbaurated Bravo II. My GPS says about 36mph on a good day. That seems slow...and my tach seems to back that up by reading about 4350 with a WOT. The engine has 280 hours, and new plugs and cap. Should I expect more?

TC..I have (check my sig )
Last year I changed my 21P prop to 17P. Lost top end but on plane in a few secs.
Well worth the change to me. I believe I'm close to your numbers but I'll give it a better look for you next week.

Yo Shine...
Thanks for the quick comeback. Bought this boat in May. I came from a 55mph boat (much smaller)....so this mid 30 stuff is killin' me. Nice to have more room though. Kinda worried about low rpm's. The manual says 4600 on WOT I think.

Get used to it. I came from a GO FAST boat as well. It takes twice as long to go any place but..........it is twice as comfortable. You just have to put it all in perspective of what you want. I have never had mine over about 26mph and plan never to do so. That is not what I bought it for.

Greetings all. I'm thrilled to find a form dedicated specifically to the boat that I have. I purchased a 2000 240 Sundancer 3 weeks ago. It's a wonderful boat and has been a ton of fun on a small lake here in eastern KY. I look forward to exchanging information with y'all (which translates into...I'll be asking a lot of questions and hopefully you folks can help me out! LOL) Thanks again for allowing me to participate.

Welcome aboard Don. Glad you joined us.
Lets see those pics.
oh...and don't forget to post your boat's info in your sig.

Pics and info forthcoming. Thank you!

Let me go ahead and throw my first question out there. I'm losing gear lube into the bilge. Last weekend I lost maybe 1/4 of a quart just idling a 1/2 mile up a cove. As I understand it, it would have to be coming from the reservoir, tubing or fitting(s) near the transom to be showing up in the bilge. There is no sign whatsoever of a leak on the outdrive. The reservoir and tubing look fine. I have borrowed a scope to help look at the fitting area. Anyone else had this type of leak or heard of it? I hope it's appropriate to post this type of question here. If not, let me know.

Thanks again,
Don

TC,
I think with the 4350 WOT RPM's out of the 5.0L/Bravo II that's probably about right. What do you have for a Cruising Speed and at what RPM?

Mike,
What are you cruising at? The 17" prop must have given you a nice hole shot. Is you cruising RPMs quite a bit higher now? Is is stainless?

TC, I think your WOT RPM should be around 4800 RPM. When I had my 240 (last year) it had the 5.0 MPI with the bravo III and it did around 48mph before the wife loaded it down with all her "stuff". Then it usually dropped the top speed down to around 43 MPH. What pitch prop are you running right now?

BTW, Mercury has a web page showing the RPM and prop pitch recommended for your boat, you may want to go there and make sure your prop is the correct one for your engine/drive set-up.

My question is....was the outdrive just serviced? If so many times the reservoir will burp itself of air from the drive and sometimes vent out. What out drive is it? This is pretty typical for a Bravo 1 if it has just been serviced.
Another thing is you may have to pull the drive and check the reservoir hose attachment to the drive. Usually they do not fail because they are on a supply demand valve, meaning when it is low some oil will drain down via a check valve.

Rat,
I'm not sure what prop is on there yet. I bought it a month ago and did a quickie visual. It's been in the water ever since. (It came with no trailer....just got my new one last week) I assumed it was what the manufacturer reccomended. (You know what they about assumming!) I bought it from a Sea Ray dealer who did an inspection....and I trusted them!!??!! It seems to cruise comfortably around 3200 rpm's at 25 mph.

See that's perfect. You won't be hitting WOT at these fuel prices very often.

I'm cruising around 34-3600 for 25MPH GPS.

I'm on plane now in about 5-6 secs. It took forever (it seemed) to plane w/ the 21P prop.
It is not stainless.
As far as RPM's and MPH, the best I can say now is cruising around 25-28MPH and RPM's is ? due to the fact my tach is wacked! I tried the "turn the knob behind the tach" trick and just didn't seem to work. It's reading crazy #'s right now. I'll have to mess with it next time I'm on the boat!

Your tach may be Bad. Mine did that on my 230OV and I had to replace it.

Also, I think you'd really like a stainless. The flex you get on those massive Bravo II's prop's Aluminum fins will go away with the Stainless and you'll be dialed in and cruising really nicely.

Well Todd...I know you like deep lakes...and mine is not one you would like.
One sec it will be 30' , then 12', then 5'.
The cost of my prop made me sick. The stainless made me puke!
For what I do, I'll stick with the one I have.
I have a GPS this year that will help me greatly, and with the map of the lake on it,
I hope I'll be fine!

Anyone ever figure out a good way to add a generator to an 08' 240 Sundancer?

If the engine layout is the same as the year 07 240 Sundancer, you can add the generator in the same location where the vaccuflush would be utilize. I can post a picture once I get home.

I have the westerbeke 3 KW.

All right you 240 guys....
post up pics of your GPS install.
I'm looking for relocating ideas!

Garmin 545s just below the wind screen and Ipod just to the left. Everything within reach and I don't have to take my eyes off the road.
