Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

the rip up of the original carpet is a royal pain. a lot of scrapping and brute force. Once it's up you realize why they put carpet down. The floor is 1/2 plywood with fiberglass overlaid. That wouldn't be so bad but for the fact that wherever they screwed through the floor to attach it to a bulkhead or stringer they put a layer of gelcoat and or glass over the hole. So the floor is a wavy mess underneath. I researched using a subfloor but couldn't find anything suitable. I ended up belt sanding the floor to knock down the high spots, then i trowled 2 gallons of USC Duraglas onto the floor. And sanded, and sanded until I got it flat.
While this was going on I had to make two new hatches because the original ones had the carpet wrapped around them. So when the carpet was removed the edge gaps were too big to do anything with. I made them out of 3/4" marine plywood and had to add another piece of 1/4" to the bottom to get the right height. sportsters78, the hatches are there if you look close. I used the original lift handles for the hatches.
I didn't pull out the sofa or the cabinets,I cut back the carpet under them and slid the new flooring in. The toe kick was left carpeted.
The floor is not slippery and is real durable. It can be repaired as each plank is a separate piece and can be removed.
Thanks for all the nice comments.

How do you get to the storage under the floor?

That looks absolutely amazing. I wish I had the flooring skills to pull that of, or a local installer that I thought I could trust to do it right. I had been curious how you had handled that area in the upper left corner of the first picture that slopes upward, I never would have thought to do it like you did.

The slope of the hull in that corner was the only thing that made me go hmmm?
Once I started laying the floor the solution was easy.

C80 crapped out last weekend. Needs to be replaced. Any suggestions? I need to keep costs down do I can take the planned summer trip.

I'd send it back to Raymarine; same thing happened to my slip neighbor and that's what he's doing. I have the same unit, it shouldn't just crap out.

Anybody have a top that goes over the cockpit sink that was not home made? I'd like to get something that fits in there nicely, not permanent, over the sink to put a blender, etc on....

Sorry to hear that but ours recently did the same thing. About the same age by the look of it. If you are replacing go with Garmin, we replaced with an 840xs and a 741xs as our fish finder went out too. With the new CHIRP transducer Garmin are so much better than the C80 and much more intuitive. Plus if you buy one within the next few weeks Garmin are doing a $200 rebate on the g2 Vision software which is excellent.

I have the WORST luck searching these forums; could someone please direct me to a link or email suggestions of how to remove and replace the factory galley TV??

Sure. The process overall was pretty straightforward if you already have a bulkhead unit installed.....sort of like hooking up a VCR to your home TV.

Option 1: Digital Converter Box

If you go with the digital converter box, you'll simply need to install it in line between the Glomex gain swith located in the cabinet just to the right of the galley TV (next to the port side of your main berth)....Remove the two screws holding the mounting plate w/Glomex switch and it pops right out.

The back of that switch has (3) coaxial mount points: (1) in from the antenna, (1) in from dockside cable, (1) out to TV.

1. You'll want to disconnect the one coming in from the Glomex antenna and connect it to the "In from antenna" input on your choice of digital converter (you can pick one up at Walmart or any electronics store).
2. Then, connect another coaxial cable to the "Out to TV" connection point on the converter, running a line to the original "In from antenna" input on the Glomex switch. This will allow the Glomex antenna to pull both digital and analog signals and display them on your analog TVs.
3. Connect your original coaxial line that was previously going "out to TV" from the Glomex switch and you should be back in business (assuming you already had a splitter pushing signal from the switch to the two OEM TV units.

Note: Ensure you turn the gain all the way up on the Glomex switch in order to pull the over the air signals which will vary depending on signal strength at whatever location you should happen to be in.

Option 2: Replacing Analog TV with TV with built in Digital Tuner

1. The bulkhead TV has a factory mounted shroud that is held in place by four screws, two on the front/top, and two more on the underside. Remove the round plastic head caps, remove the screws and the shroud comes right off.
2. The TV is mounted on a two part plate (one piece screwed onto the back of the TV, the other piece is screwed onto the bulkhead itself....they slide together). You'll need a phillips head screwdriver that will reach the bottom of the mount to remove the two screws securing the two pieces together.
3. Once those screws are removed, simply lift the TV up about two/three inches and it should release from the wall mounted back plate.
4. Disconnect the coaxial cable, and three RCA cables (red/white/yellow), and TV power cord.
5. Lie the old TV on something soft/flat and remove the universal mounting plate from the back of the TV.
6. Remount the backing plate on your new TV, and reverse the above.

Note: Depending on the size of the new TV, you may have to do some surgery on the TV shroud in order for it to fit. I took my shroud home and make the cuts with a jigsaw after making precise measurements to fit my new/larger TV, and refit the vinyl cover as necessary, which included removing about 59,694 or so ridiculously over-applied Sea Ray staples, so be mentally prepared for that. I didn't need anywhere near as many when I put it back together, and it looks fine.

Same general process for the galley TV if you find something new that will fit in the current space. Some have upgraded that TV as well, and you can search Google for some ideas. I personally found the picture of the new TV so much more appealling I had no further use for that smaller unit and pulled it completely. Conversely, you could just leave it in place and continue to use it, your choice.

Thank you for this great detail! I don't currently have a bulkhead TV (only the galley one) but I may mount one there someday - I appreciate the info!!

Thank you! We are nearby and were in Michigan City just last weekend. If you have any pics of your tv install I'd love to see it!

I don't have the galley TV in my boat, but I switched my neighbor's boat (2003) galley TV out for a flat screen that fit the hole. One of the challenges is finding a flat screen TV that will fit. Next time I have access to his boat, I'll snap some pictures.

Thanks so much for the pics!!

I found the TV 3 years ago on my12vtstore.com and the articulating arm on Amazon.

reinforced the the mounting point with a chunk of 3/4" plywood paint black screwed/glued to flimsy bulkhead. It has survived 8' Lake Ontario seas for 4 hour crossing.

Hi everyone,
we just purchased our first boat 2005 340. We have been out about 15 times this season using iPad and navionics. Considering an upgrade from the c90 to garmin 741. We were not planning on a radar upgrade until west marine explained the farming is not comparable with ray marine radar. Has anyone else done this upgrade and is the radar worth it, we were in some bad fog twice so if the upgrade is nice it's probably worth it for us. Anyone else mount it somewhere dele on the dash and keep the ray marine in place? Thanks
