Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

That's a good idea, especially as us boaters in the northeast are about to get pounded with a historic blizzard later today. After attending the NYC boat show this past weekend, can't wait for boat season!!!
Time to revive this thread a little and maybe help some of the newer style 340 owners with questions they have. The 99-03 thread is a wealth of knowledge and should be read but these boat are vastly different other than in name.

Re: 2003.5-2008 340 Sundacer Thread

If anyone is near their 2003.5+ 340 Sundancer - would you be able to measure the galley counter? distance from aft to the edge of the cooktop, and front edge to the back storage area.

Mine is freezing it's rear drive off and wrapped for the winter. I have a winter project to build a cutting board.

Thks

Does anyone know the lengths and size of both the chain and rope anchor rode provided as standard in an '05 340?

Re: 2003.5-2008 340 Sundacer Thread

Coming into the first spring with the boat. I plan on beating the rush and having engines and transmissions annual service done mid-March. I will pay. Too old and inflexible to try and contort my way around that engine room. What should be done in addition to changing plugs, oil, filters, checking coolant and all hoses, clamps, thru hulls, and belts on the engines. What else? Fuel filters, etc.? What needs done on the transmissions? Fluid, filters?
finally, what should I reasonably expect to pay?
Generator: Coolant, plugs, oil, filter?

Mark, Give them your Hull# they will let you know if they made the original or have the pattern. I replaced all my isenglas last year through them - you just have to put the snaps on yourself.

Good idea. I will try that with them.. They have given me two different quotes with different items. I'm not feeling confident with them before ordering and they don't seem to want to help..

I don't have a generator, so I can't help you there. I do the transmission, oil and fuel service myself. It takes me about 30-45 minutes to do both transmissions. To change the oil and filters, about 30-45 minutes too, which includes bringing the engines up to temperature. The fuel filters depends on whether you have the newer cool fuel unit. It does not have the separate canister fuel filters. It takes about 30 minutes to do both engines if you only have engine mounted fuel filters, otherwise, it'll take about 1 hour to do both engines. So basically, the labor costs should be about 1:30 to 2:30 for those items plus parts.

I have a mechanic do the plugs, because they are a major pain in the butt to get to. He charges 2 hours of labor to do the job, and it pretty much takes him that long.

I'd expect that you will be paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $700 or slightly more, depending on the going rate for a mechanic. The engines hold 18 quarts of oil between the two of them, so just the parts alone will be over $300. Then add the generator...

When was the last time the engines were aligned? That should be done every couple years as well. The coolant should be changed every 5 years, so that might be due also.

Just curious if anyone else has the 6.2s with V-Drives. I have one and one of my friends has one. Both are 2006.

Re: 2003.5-2008 340 Sundacer Thread

Its been cold here in Charleston! Quick question. When in "auto" mode and the heater panel is on, is the blower ever supposed to shut off? My heat cycles fine and when the heat (and cooling water pump) shut down the fan blower continues. The fan blower never cycles off. I am a new owner and don't know if I have a switch or panel issue of if this is the way the heat/AC units operate.

Thanks:huh:

Mine is always on when in auto. I do believe there is a way to have the fan shut down when the heat/air cycles but I'm not sure how to do it.

There is a way to turn off the fan. You need to reprogram the panel. One drawback to not having the fan running is the location of the temperature sensor. It is currently located inside of the cabinet where the blower is located. With the fan running, it will sense the air temperature as it is sucked into the cabinet, but without the fan, the sensor will only sense the cabinet air. I have read where people have reprogramed the fan and moved the sensor out into the main cabin. But one that I read was having issues with programming the sensor to read the temperature correctly.

I believe that the manufactuer has the detailed instructions on reprogramming the unit on thier website.

Thanks, I am not inclined to go to that trouble and it seems continuous air flow was the design. Its not a bother I simply wanted to know if I had an issue to chase. Thanks for the quick answers.

For those of you that have added a memory foam topper to the forward birth, what size pad are you buying? Queen or King?

Alex - I bought a King 4" Memory Foam Topper from Costco. Cut it with an electric knife. Your mattress is tapered along the inner hull on the sides - I laid the mattress upside down on top of the foam (out of the boat) and cut it to the extended taper.

Bet that didn't make any sense at all!

Actually had to trim it a bit when I moved it to my 410...

Thanks Carter. That makes perfect sense. Looks like I'll be adding a couple of hundred to our Costco trip this week!

I assume that you leave the mattress in place and put the topper, well, on top.

Need the king to reach out to the widest part of the berth. Be careful going to thick on the foam, it' makes getting in and out of the bed difficult. After about 4 years of dealing with a 4" memory topper I bought a custom innerspring mattress two years ago, best money I've spent on the boat. Should have done that the first year I bought the boat.

I just added the memory foam that Costco carries for a king. It "relaxed" to about 3" thick and was simple to cut and overlay the current mattress. I want to say $79?! I have slept on it and it makes a world of difference and does not get too hot (of course I may change that tune come summer).
